Do you remember what it was like going to High School in the 1970s? I do. I most certainly do. In fact, the older I get the more removed that I am from it. As time passes, it starts to look like some kind of a scene from “The Twilight Zone”. The truth is that the kind of life that I had growing up is really alien to the way kids grow up today. That is worrisome, and it really concerns me.
When an American intern comes in to work for me, I am stunned just how absolutely helpless they are. They do not realize that they must go to work before the start of the working hours, and cannot leave until the workday is over. They don’t realize some of the most fundamentals regarding self-initiative is totally missing from them. American kids today are robots, or maybe zombies. They need and expect constant supervision. They are afraid to do anything.
Now this only pertains to my American interns.
The interns that I get from Germany, France, Singapore, and England are just fine. What is wrong with America? What are they teaching in schools there? Ugh. I think that I will devote another post to cover that subject. As it is truly alarming.
Whenever I berate an intern about something that they did wrong, I often use examples from my childhood. I use them to illustrate key points. Such as, [1] you need to eat breakfast at home before you come to work. [2] Showers are not optional. [3] Don’t check your Facebook when you are in a meeting with the boss. Fought all of this in high school for many years. Administrations sided with parents and threw me out. I fought tooth and nail exactly what you have written about. The schools are SO political that no will exists to instill appropriate discipline and training in self-control. Whoever tries ends up unemployed.
I graduated in 1965, Every day for my entire school life, we stood, faced the flag, put our hands over our hearts and said the pledge of allegiance. I always left out the word indivisible and no one cared. Some time in the 50s “Under God” was added.
We would then have a student read from the Bible then we all said the Lord’s Prayer.
100% was the most you could get on an exam and 4.0 was the highest GPA possible. Our Valedictorian did not have a 4.0.
I failed Latin yet I still use things I learned in that class today. Even tho I failed, I learned a lot.

I got out of the Navy in the early 70’s and went back to JC to pick up a few credits for my AA.
After the first history written exam was graded my teacher prof called me aside and asked where I had gone to HS. I said right here at _________ High. He went on to explain how he never saw correct writing skills from the local HS’s at that time.
I remember a devotional and prayer over the intercom every morning usually spoken by a student from the speech class, or sometimes from the Principal.
The other thing I remember is everybody seemed to have firearms in their cars or truck out in the parking lot. During the morning and afternoon breaks we hung out in the parking lot and often someone would be showing off a new shotgun or handgun. If the coach walked by he would stop and comment on what a nice looking gun it was...maybe handle it and aim upwards as aiming for dove or something.
If that scenario were to happen in todays schools the vice squad would be there in minutes. I’m so thankful that I went to school when I did!

School year-—1954-55-—I was teaching that year——also the same year Salk vaccine was given to the kids——a big year for my 1st graders.
Was that the one on the sugar cubes? I still remember lining up in the cafeteria along a cafeteria table and getting a sugar cube.
The original purpose of HS was to produce trained worers. Hence the semi industrial environment with movement controlled by bells and distant unfriedly teachers.
Kids today are either stump stupid or on drugs, nothing else could explain how worthless they are at doing anything but playing with their phone.
Back in the 60’s, I had to walk uphill 10 miles in the snow to get to school, then another 10 miles uphill to get home.

A science teacher in my junior year of high school (late 60s) said he had to teach us about evolution but that he personally believed in creation and explained why.
I also remember hearing a morning devotional/Bible reading allowed over the school intercom each day. We pledged allegiance to the flag, too.
The Millenials were born between 1980-1995, a bit too late to be in high school in 1970s. lol
The Salk vaccine consisted of dead viruses and was injected. It was replaced by the Sabin vaccine, which was taken orally, during the Kennedy administration.

My work place just hired a millennial who consistently demands things.
What parent in their right mind would raise a kid that believes this??? Major failure.
