We wrote about a recent burglary in Des Moines in which a Des Moines store owner arrived at his business, only to find Amund Benjamin Haarstad in the process of relieving him of some of his inventory. The store owner shot and killed Haarstad.
Now, as happens so often these situations . . .
Family members of a man slain in an apparent burglary attempt said he never should have been shot and killed, admitting wrongdoing by both parties involved. The fatal shooting happened just after 7:15 a.m. Wednesday at Kraft Imports and 5 Star Muffler in the 1400 block of Army Post Road on Des Moines south side.
According to Haarstads sister, her brother doesnt have a history of violence. Except, of course, that isnt really true. Harstaad was a junkie who had served time for attacking a man with a screwdriver.
The store owner isnt completely in the clear yet.
Its unclear exactly what led up to the shooting. Des Moines police said there are still a lot of things to figure out, and theyre not calling it a stand your ground case just yet. A decision on any charges will come from the Polk County Attorneys Office.
In the mean time, Haarstads family think the store owner should have well its not really clear how they think he should have handled the situation.
Its just hard, his sister said. I just want people to know that he was human, too.
Thats certainly true. Its also true that their all-too-human brother chose to break into another humans business and, in all likelihood, threaten him when he was caught.
(Des Moines police Sgt. Paul) Parizek shared a message for anyone considering a life of crime.
You never know when youre going to pick the wrong business and youre going to encounter the wrong business (owner) thats got their heels dug in, he said. Theyre going to protect their property and themselves, and this is the type of thing that may happen, he said.
Words to live by.
Aspiring rapper, no doubt.
He's still human. He's now a dead human.
Criminals and their families consider crime to be a legitimate career path, and armed victims to be an OSHA violation.
The store owner, his employees, the community he served; were all human too.
Drugs are a terrible thing. And people addicted to them do terrible things. That is the real story.
Haarstad sought out someone to victimize.
The store owner did not seek him out.
The store owner killed him do to fear for his own life.
End of story.
Lesson here: Don’t pull stupid animal tricks if you don’t want to be put down.
Junkie lives matter!
He killed an undocumented shopper, whats the world coming to.
Who had decided to go to community college this fall....
Nah...just a junkie. If you cant do the time, dont do the crime.
Que the “He chose poorly” meme.. d:^)
Don’t have enough details about this incident or Iowa law to make a decision about this.
Anyone have any more info than “he shot a burglar”?
Funny. The critics of the lion poachers who were mauled to death don’t feel that way.
One might comment here, but it looks like a consensus has been reached...
The fact he was human, although questionable, is irrelevant.
He was unequal, that is , subhuman. Humans real humans, do not rob other humans
A white dindu.
Human being? I thought he was a cat burglar. Thanks for clearing that up.
This is the last excuse they have to give for his behavior.
