Climate change killed the aliens, and it might kill us too, new simulation suggests

Did climate change already kill all the aliens we've been searching for?

According to astrophysicist Adam Frank, it's certainly a possibility — and whether humans are doomed to the same fate may already be out of our hands.

Frank, a professor of physics and astronomy at the University of Rochester in New York, is the lead author of a new paper published May 1 in the journal Astrobiology that aims to take what Frank calls a "10,000-light-year" view of anthropogenic (human-caused) climate change. Using mathematical models based on the disappearance of a real-life lost civilization here on Earth (the former inhabitants of Easter Island), Frank and his colleagues simulated how various alien civilizations might rise and fall if they were to increasingly convert their planet's limited natural resources into energy.

"The laws of physics demand that any young population, building an energy-intensive civilization like ours, is going to have feedback on its planet," Frank said in a statement. "Seeing climate change in this cosmic context may give us better insight into what's happening to us now and how to deal with it."

In the movie, the spaceship crashes and the aliens are stranded until they can figure out how to fix it.

The ultra smart aliens from many light years away, that can overcome time and travel still could not combat climate change. We are fools for thinking we can too. That would be a bummer if the left the last planet because of climate change only to be killed on the planed they thought would be a refuge. Is there anywhere safe in the universe.

LOL. That she is. With those big beautiful "come hither" eyes and that cute little button nose, what's not to like?

” . . . what Frank calls a “10,000-light-year” view of anthropogenic (human-caused) climate change.”

Not sure how much credence I’d put in somebody who doesn’t even know the difference between units of distance and units of time.

Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide.

I know for a fact that I would enjoy An OST (original Star Trek) six hour session much much more...

Any aliens capable of visiting us from distant solar systems or galaxies would be more than capable of terraforming the planet to their liking.

Then the new climate would become _our_ problem.

(Alternatively they could live in underground caverns...even a dumb alien could figure that out!)

As a kid I was fascinated by the Erich Von Daniken "Chariots of the Gods" books. Today, I don't believe we have ever been visited by aliens, but the etchings on the plains of Nazca and other ancient creations are still fascinating.

I guess these were the "crop circles" of ancient times

My ass. The natural hazards tend to keep the shrubbery trimmed but not dead. Also, the Fermi Paradox is a buzzing-fly-swarming truckload, as are the "Rare Earth" arguments, the nutty superstitious crap about 3rd kind encounters, and the knee-jerk reactions by those who think that knowledge is complete.
Thanks Right_Wing_Madman.

This article is pure horseshit. IT ties “climate change” to the the Fermi Paradox and throws int he Drake Equation to boot. What a bunch of politicized drivel.

“The truth is we have so far not found nor have any bloody idea if and/or where alien species might exist, let alone have reached technological levels in their development...”

Yeah. Believe what you want.

it’s an unwarranted trust that government would automatically tell everyone in the nation that aliens exist. It’s a belief that the government would not hide the information and keep it locked up for personal use, political advantage and military advantage.

Of course...!

There are no aliens because the government would have told us if there were! (Slaps forehead with palm.)

Well put. It is part of that old tradition where self-described contactees claim that the aliens told them, or continue to tell them, that we're not being good stewards of the Earth, as if aliens would know this or give a fat ****.

When I see someone looking at their phone walk into a moving car I think the theory that everyone just falls into a virtual reality hole when they get technologically advanced enough deserves some consideration.

Proof, Sir? Extraordinary claims demand extraordinary evidence...

I understand there is a widespread belief the Earth has been and is being visited by numerous alien races regularly, for their own reasons and purposes, benevolent and otherwise...

I can’t argue for or against this belief...I’d be willing to acknowledge this is so if there were some solid proof beyond fuzzy out-of-focus photos and anecdotal reports from “eye witnesses” and “abductees”...It may also be true, as many others suggest, the “alien” visitations are theater created and used by our would-be earthly masters to manipulate our minds...

I suspect it’s true the universe is teeming with life, but again, where’s the tangible evidence? If discovered, keeping the secret would be exceedingly difficult...

Again, my main point was not to argue for or against the existence of alien intelligences that likely do exist, but to argue the astrophysicist author is full of the well known substance re: origins and effects of climate change...

Cheers!
