Trump faces bipartisan criticism over press conference with Putin

President Trump faced harsh bipartisan criticism back home for his Helsinki press conference with Vladimir Putin on Monday, as lawmakers claimed the U.S. president missed a chance to "stand up" to the Russian president on election meddling.

The U.S. president, for his part, called the summit with Putin "deeply productive." After Democrats for days called on him to nix the meeting in the wake of indictments against Russian officers for U.S. campaign hacking, Trump said he would "not make decisions on foreign policy in a futile effort to appease partisan critics."

He cited progress on a range of issues, and said it would be a "good thing" to get along with Russia.

However, the president angered members of both parties by saying both countries share blame for damaged relations and by not firmly standing by U.S. intelligence assessments that Russia meddled in the 2016 elections.

Trump said he has great confidence in the intelligence community, but Putin gave a "strong and powerful" denial. He said he doesn't "see any reason why" Russia would be behind election meddling.

"There is no question that Russia interfered in our election and continues attempts to undermine democracy here and around the world," House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., countered.

Others were less reserved in their response.

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., who has been out of Washington for months battling brain cancer, issued a blistering statement calling the performance “disgraceful.”

“President Trump proved not only unable, but unwilling to stand up to Putin. He and Putin seemed to be speaking from the same script as the president made a conscious choice to defend a tyrant against the fair questions of a free press, and to grant Putin an uncontested platform to spew propaganda and lies to the world,” McCain said

How the hell do these "lawmakers" know what The President said to Putin in their private meeting?? If they're so concerned about the ruskies hacking podesta and the other demWITS, then introduce another one of their stupid resolutions, or STFU!

The Deep State admirers and closet lefties at Fox must be auditioning for jobs at cnn or msnbc

Not letting critics or headlines form foreign policy. Obama was never criticized for not standing up to Putin and running down the US.

As the saying goes, if he walked on water, the headline would be, "Trump can't swim". Bad news, Demagogic Party -- if I'm going to be forced to live in a single party state, it isn't going to be your ****ing party, and you won't be around to trouble posterity when it all gets completed. Thanks reaganaut1.

Trump faces bipartisan criticism over...

Whenever I see this headline, I always think, "A whole bunch of Democrats plus John McCain."

I'm rarely wrong.

The timing of Friday’s indictments was a deliberate setup to sabotage POTUS

Indeed it was.

[Who exactly is speaking on behalf of McCain?]

This could be a scandal in itself.

The president should have just told Putin to “knock it off” during the presser. What could the left say? It was good enough for the Kenyan.

What the?? That was the best summit presser since Reagan. Most representative of the interests of all American people. You would have to be stupid or brainwashed not to see that!

“”””””””Who exactly is speaking on behalf of McCain? We keep hearing he’s releasing statements but he hasn’t been seen in public in months.””””””””””

If McCain could speak for himself he would be doing it in front of the nearest camera. However, if he spoke in front of a camera we would see proof that he has been full Weekend at Bernies for months.

Is it just me or is what Russia supposedly did during the election not all that surprising, not all that interesting and not all that consequential?

Seriously, it is not moving the needle much for me. It’s like the media is trying to force me to get all up in arms about it. They act like it’s the end of the world.

I think they want someone to blame for Clinton’s loss and anything that doesn’t move that narrative forward is blasphemy.

Remember, TRUMP IS THE STORM!

As far as I can tell the media (not much press anymore)are are long on long on headline Symantec acrobats and short on substance from the press meeting.

"PUTIN: As to who is to be believed, who is not to be believed, you can trust no one. Where did you get this idea that President Trump trusts me or I trust him? He defends the interests of the United States of America. I do defend the interests of the Russian Federation."

It seemed to me he was taking the first step in the take-down-the-deep-state plan by bringing up the DNC server and the Awans. Also, setting up revealing of the hypocrisy of the left in general and the fake news in particular, hoping they would criticize him when they never criticized 0bama or Hillary for kowtowing to Putin.
