Trump's Nato approach helped make a difference, says May

Theresa May has defended Donald Trump’s approach to last week’s Nato summit, claiming it made all the difference in encouraging European allies to “step up” their defence spending.

The US president left the Brussels talks in disarray after setting a January deadline for other alliance members to increase defence spending and hinting that the US may quit Nato if they failed to do so.

For the second year in a row, Trump caused turmoil at a Nato summit, criticising the Germans, turning up late for a meeting, ignoring the issues on the table and securing an emergency discussion on spending.

But on Monday in the Commons, May praised his approach despite the extraordinary interview he gave just hour later to the Sun that undermined her Brexit strategy and humiliated her personally.

“We share his view that we want to see allies all stepping up to meet the commitment they gave at the summit in Wales in 2014 to spend 2% of their GDP on defence and 20% of that on equipment,” she told MPs.

“It’s something we meet and a limited number of other members of Nato meet, including the United States of America. [Trump’s] making this point about burden-sharing has made a difference.

“Just in the last year we’ve seen an extra $41bn added to defence budgets across the Nato allies and there was a real sense at this summit, following the discussion that he initiated, that we would see people not just stepping up in terms of going to meet their 2%, but seeing that there was an increased urgency in doing this.”

NATO is past its sell-by date. Time to make changes - it was useful in the past, but no longer makes much sense in the modern world. As a final nail in the coffin, Trump diffused any notion of Cold War 2.0

Yes, it’s pretty hard to make a difference with the top of your head pointed at those you wish to make deals with.

I note the Guardian couldn’t go one paragraphs without posting something negative about Trump, even though May was praising him.

Hey 41 billion more last year and more than that the next year, that’s progress any way you slice it.

It’s still not too late to ask Trump to negotiate Brexit for you.

Trump's Nato approach helped make a difference, says May

There has been no POTUS that has even attempted to do what President Trump has accomplished with NATO, since after WWII.

The Far Left Lame Stream Media is dead to us now since they will not report the facts and we know them better than those "Giant Sixth Grade Brain Journalists".

The MSM in this country has become the biggest joke on the American populace and yet they are not even ashamed or embarrassed by it all since they are the right arm of the Rat party!!!!!

Partner, I think a lot of folks are getting so tired of this "Fake News MSM". We can only hope right now that NBC, ABC, CBS, CNN, MSNBC will hire more folks that lean towards the middle at least. These guys they have giving out the news are so Far Left Leaning Liberals.

We only see the Fox Business Channel. The only guy we can not stand is that "Neil Cavuto" who is a far left leaning liberal. We certainly like ole "Lou Dobbs" who is from Texas and it seems like he is the only one in MSM telling it like it is right now. Charles mentioned that we can make a lot of these products here in the good ole U.S.A.

Charles Payne also is one of the best in telling folks what is exactly going on in the business world vs the destructive politics that comes out of the MSM and the far left.

Charles Payne mentioned on his show that President Trump is correct in telling these guys that we in the U.S. are not going to be the dumping ground for your products so we see the "entrepreneurial" spirit in the U.S. pick up a notch.
