Omega-3 no protection against heart attack or strokes, say scientists
The Guardian ^ | July 17, 2018 | Sarah Boseley

“We can be confident in the findings of this review which go against the popular belief that long-chain omega-3 supplements protect the heart,” said Cochrane lead author, Dr Lee Hooper from the University of East Anglia. “This large systematic review included information from many thousands of people over long periods. Despite all this information, we don’t see protective effects.” [snip] The researchers embarked on their systematic review at the request of the World Health Organisation, which is updating its guidance on polyunsaturated fats. The belief that omega-3 supplements could protect against cardiovascular diseases came from a couple of positive results from trials in the late 1980s and early 1990s, said Lee. “We’ve all believed it for quite a long while,” she said. “But none of the trials since have shown these results. We somehow haven’t adjusted to that data.”

Lee is a member of the World Health Organization Nutrition Guidance Expert Advisory Group (NUGAG), with advice and support in systematic reviewing methodology. As well as being a Cochrane editor...(From her bio on LinkedIn).

This is political. The editor of this article as well as the Cochrane Group's so-called researchers behind this report are all left wing pro-European Union and anti-Brexit anti-capitalists hell bent on economic warfare against the established canned fish industry which is based in Europe and the U.S., with sales in the many hundreds of millions of dollars. Odd how this "report" was published right on the heels of President Trump's visit to Great Britain (and his economic critique of Teresa May) which the established left in the UK tried so hard to derail.

Of course it works. You just aren’t taking a “pure” enough form. Just saw a commercial about this, it must be true! /s

Yes, a group commissioned by WHO; I don’t believe a word they say. I would prefer to read Dr. Mercola.

Running protects the heart.

Jogging protects the heart.

Get that 60 beats per minute up to 120 bpm.

Bump that limit.

“Eating more ALA from supplemented margarine...”

Margarine is nothing but vegetable oil. You should eat real butter.

I’m always skeptical when I see studies like this. Follow the money.

Looked at the article and the link in the article and somehow I missed the links to the studies that say Omega 3 is worthless.

>>It happened with vitamins and now the Cochrane research had shown the same thing with omega-3.

The so-called vitamin study, which the media gladly stated as being conclusive of all supplements, was a propaganda exercise masquerading as science. It has been used, as intended, by politicians in the US to propose putting supplements under the aegis of FDA control, as prescription medicines are today.

These nanny-staters actually want people to die earlier so there is less burden on their beloved welfare state.
They do not want the rabble to live long, healthy, happy lives.

This is not a study—it is a meta-analysis of only “the best studies.”

The lead finding talks of ALA, which is plant Omega-3. The second finding is about DHA and EPA in pill form.

It says everyone should get Omega-3s from animals (fish).

Sucks to be a vegan!

Thousands of people take omega-3 supplements regularly and for years.

Millions.

Lee said there was not enough trial evidence to show whether or not eating more oily fish is beneficial – although she suspected it probably is.

So fish-in-a-capsule isn't effective, but a fish probably is.

Hopefully this isn't the case. I have a bit of money (stock) riding on Vescepa (Amarin Corp)for reducing Cardio Vascular Events. Their Phase 3 outcomes study is winding down. Their “fish pill” is highly purified EPA acid, with near complete removal of DHA acid. It is already approved for high trig’s, but if it passes FDA mustard for reducing Cardiac events it will be a block buster drug. It's trading below $3 a share with not a lot of down side risk. Even if the study fails it will be a profitable Company just with sales for lowering trig’s.

Dr. Mercola is awesome.

I have all the proof I need that fish oil helps. I take 1800mg a day and my cholesterol dropped from over 200 down to 160.

The thing is, fish oil by itself only has so much impact, have to increase one's water intake to help it flush the bad cholesterol out. Most people miss that part.

The problem with any study that looks at reams of data to try to tease out the benefits or harms of one food is the underlying assumption that there are magic foods out there which are especially “bad” or “good” for health. There are not. The body needs a variety of foods consumed as a balanced ratio of proteins, fats, and carbohydrates. The body needs a small quantity of micronutrients (NOT megadoses as the multibillion dollar supplement industry would have us believe).

A person eating a high fat diet and eschewing fresh fruits and vegetables is not going to remain healthy because they pop a magic pill.

In a nutshell, this is the essence of this Cochrane review.

If any of you are taking fish oil capsules, at least make sure that the capsule doesn’t have rancid oil inside.

And,no, I don’t have any economic interest in this website.

Margarine is nothing but vegetable oil. You should eat real butter.

And margarine typically uses very poor quality vegetable oil which is then artificially hydrogenated. You're right about butter. It's all natural, and tastes 10 times better than margarine.

Today’s conventional wisdom is tomorrow’s old wive’s tale.

Years ago I had a tolerable cholesterol level. Then the "experts" dictated the numbers were still too high and suddenly I had a problem.

Two months ago I was merely "prehypertension" concerning blood pressure. Then the "experts" dictated that the numbers were still too high and suddenly I was stage 1 hypertensive.

Do the accountants and lobbyists for big pharma have anything to do with these studies? (Rhetorical question)

Speaking of foods and their claims, yesterday my mom was baking cakes and asked me to pickup some flour & margarine. When I got home and showed her the margarine I asked her why did she need it as its really a non-food item. She said that she misspoke and meant to say butter.

I then took up a plastic bottle of her pills from the table as explained to her that margarine is very close to being like the plastic that made up her pill bottles.
