The Senate Judiciary Committee cleared a handful of President Donald Trumps circuit and district court picks Thursday, teeing them up for consideration on the Senate floor.
The panel voted along an 11-10 party-line split to approve Britt Grant, who was nominated to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit, and David Porter, who was tapped for the Third Circuit.
Porters nomination was heavily opposed. Senate Democrats and opposition groups had zeroed in on the Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney shareholders previous writings and associations. During his confirmation hearing, he attempted to downplay that past, but also picked up criticism for declining to answer whether U.S. Supreme Court precedents such as Brown v. Board of Education were correctly decided. His home-state senator, Democratic Sen. Bob Casey of Pennsylvania, refused to return a blue slip for Porter.
Grant, who currently serves as a Georgia Supreme Court justice, is a former Judge Brett Kavanaugh clerk, and had worked in Kirkland & Ellis Washington, D.C., office. Yet activist groups such as the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights opposed Grant for her previous work helping write amicus briefs in the Voting Rights Act case Shelby County v. Holder, and in a suit related to the state of Kansas proof-of-citizenship voter law.
Two of Trumps Fourth Circuit picksMarvin Quattlebaum and Julius Ness Richardsonwere also advanced to the floor by votes of 15-6 and 20-1, respectively. Quattlebaum currently sits on the U.S. District Court for the District of South Carolina. Richardson, an assistant U.S. attorney in South Carolina, successfully prosecuted the case against Dylann Roof, the mass murderer who in 2015 killed nine black churchgoers in Charleston, South Carolina.

Was there one who didn’t make the grade yesterday? I thought I heard a blurb on the news.
No, that was on the floor. Senators Scott and Rubio decided at the very last minute that they didn’t like 9th circuit nominee Rounds, because he expressed anti-multiculturalism views in college. God forbid!
Scott folding in the clutch is no way to get reelected in SC.
The confirmation pace of Appeals Court judges has been great. But, in a year and a half, only 20 district court judges have been confirmed. Another 48 have been approved by the Judiciary Committee and are awaiting floor votes. Time is running out. What is McConnell waiting for??

“Time is running out. What is McConnell waiting for??”
That’s what Mitch is hoping for, time to run out!
Wonder if little Rubio and Scott will screw these two up too.
