PODGORICA (Reuters) - Perched atop massive cement pillars that tower above Montenegro’s picturesque Moraca river canyon, scores of Chinese workers are building a state-of-the-art highway through some of the roughest terrain in southern Europe.

The government has described the 165 km (103 mile) highway, with its imposing bridges and deep-cut tunnels, as the construction of the century and a pathway to the modern world.

It is designed to link the port of Bar on Montenegro’s Adriatic coast to landlocked neighbor Serbia. But once the first, challenging 41 km stretch through mountains north of the capital is completed, the government faces a difficult choice.

Paying for it...

Right now the debt load of the completion will reach 80% of their GDP which in the balance of the hoped for benefits will make it impossible to retire the debt as the reduction of services to it’s people will be gobbled up to pay it back.

China is planing long term, with endless goodwill infrastructure projects. All to support their manufacturing base.

The US with the corporate interests, running the politicians. Is based on short term profits and selling war goods. Obtaining oil, gas & mineral control.... The body count of one of these strategies is not going over well with much of the world. Very sad!

Might be the dumbest thing I have ever seen!

My ex’s Aunt and Uncle did a couple of missionary trips to China. The pictures they took show extreme poverty, something folks in the Appalachians or Mississippi Delta in this country could relate too, and the stories they told were even more extreme.

This project sounds a lot like the CA Jerry Brown HSR debacle!

Exactly what I was thinking. Transportation link that few would use and extremely expensive, besides that it is a path to no where. (The envisioned high-speed rail between SF and LA bogs down before it hits either city, the high-speed is only far away in the boonies. Totally unworkable plan, and wastes billions of dollars over decades of time.) This Montenegro highway will never be finished and will bankrupt them.

Yikes. Government bean counters must have missed the cost estimates by a couple of decimal places.

They should hire from the private sector next time.

That’s about $18,000 per person. Given the length of the tunnel, apparently he wants to bury the whole length, from the LIE to Rye. Insane.

... plus, of course, ignore Musk’s Boring Company, which would probably do it for about 3% as much $$.
