Poll: Americans overwhelmingly reject voting rights for undocumented immigrants
The Hill ^

San Francisco's Department of Elections last week made the move to start allowing non-U.S. citizens to vote in the city's school board elections, sparking a national debate.

The idea is unlikely to be copied in many localities, at least if the latest American Barometer poll is any indication.

According to the survey, which is a joint project of Hill.TV and the HarrisX polling company, 71 percent of respondents opposed San Francisco's decision, while only 29 percent said they supported the move.

Ninety-one percent of Republicans polled said they opposed giving the right to vote to noncitizens, as did 54 percent of Democrats.

Seventy percent of independents said they were also in opposition to the decision.

When respondents were asked the same question but with the wording changed to include the term "illegal immigrants" instead of non-U.S. citizens, the results were nearly the same.

Sixty-nine percent of Americans said they opposed the measure, while only 31 percent said they supported the measure.

When asked the question with the term "illegal immigrant," 91 percent of Republicans said they opposed giving them voter rights, while 55 percent of Democrats also said they disagreed with the move.

Sixty-five percent of Democrats also said they were against the measure.

"It makes perfect sense, and that's what we've seen in polling on this issue where even Republicans, obviously, overwhelmingly oppose it, but even Democrats think it's a bad idea, and independents think it's a really, really bad idea," Republican pollster Jim McLaughlin told Hill.TV's Joe Concha on "What America's Thinking."

The poll was conducted July 21–22 among 1,0001 registered voters.

Even Democrats in the poll opposed the idea!

"Ninety-one percent of Republicans polled said they opposed giving the right to vote to noncitizens, as did 54 percent of Democrats."

Dems think immigration is going to get them votes. They have it backwards.

The GOP will see this as an opportunity to “educate” its base. Jumping the border is an “act of love” and stopping it is against “our values”.

If they’re illegal, they aren’t immigrants. They’re alien border crashers or invaders

If Putin flies to Mexico, crosses the border illegally, he can vote in San Francisco.

What’s scary is 8% of GOP and 30% of independents think it’s ok for illegals to vote. That is a lot of voters.

They are not "undocumented immigrants", they are ILLEGAL ALIENS! Calling them undocumented immigrants is like calling shoplifting an "undocumented purchase."

That is truly scary. Any number greater than zero on that is depressing.

A stupid poll for stupid people. 29% of the population are too stupid to be walking around free.

This, along with welfare, are the principal reasons the public is so strongly against unregulated immigration. It's also the reason the left is so strongly against regulated immigration.

PROOF: Propose a comprehensive, effective system of preventing non-citizens from voting and from receiving welfare, while also completely eliminating any restrictions on who may enter the country. Observe the reactions of both sides.

What percentage of the Democrats who are in favor of it are illegals?

That's exactly right. And these morons who make up these polls and the headlines seem to not care one whit that legal immigrants don't have the right to vote either. It is only after they become citizens (if, indeed, they do) that they have the right to vote.

Who cares what the people think, how the legislatures vote or the laws enforced by the executive?

Everyone knows federal judges—sometimes just a single one in Hawaii—are our ruling overlords.
