What High School Taught me About Democracy

Everything that I need to know about Democracy, I learned in High School. It’s true. By the time I started work at 14, I had a very good understanding about how democracy worked.

Now, this wasn’t by sitting down in Civics Class. It wasn’t by listening to a teacher instruct us. It wasn’t by reading a book on politics. No. It was by my experiences on Student Council.

You know, it is absolutely amazing to me that I received such a profound understanding at such an early age. Even my father, a staunch liberal democrat, couldn’t grasp his arms around my perception of it. He thought that they must have been teaching me some very strange things indeed. Yet, here we were. I would come home from school with a perception of governance that was alien to everything that he believed In.

While I cannot speak for every single school in the 1960s and 1970s, I can most certainly state that

There's that crazy "D" word again.

Makes one wonder exactly how many times they've recited the Pledge of Allegiance, and what they pledged allegiance to.

It certainly wasn't a Democracy.

I think it's important we know who they are and promote them when we can.

I may be the last to know of them, but I don't want anyone else not to know, so here's the info.

Even if you knew about them before, this might be a decent resource for finding their work.

I'm sure I've left people out, so I'd appreciate folks mentioning them to me so I can add them to this short list.

That’s the top down view, and thank goodness for it. But, within each level of the Republic’s hierarchy, there’s a lot of democracy. For example, do you feel like you have significant access through your vote to the local school board? I didn’t. It was schemes, deals, and incrowds.
