Seems my Greek friend fought the Marxists in his homeland, and won.

If he fought them in Greece, he lost. Maybe not personally, but Greece has been more communist than Berserkley, CA for over a half century.

No. The civil war in Greece was won by anti communist government in 1949.

What happened afterward with slow encroachment of Socialism ending in a nearly communist state now in Greece is not the war he fought. He won the war but lost the peace. Which is probably why he ran a diner on Long Island where I knew him in the mid 1960s.
