Former Libertarian Party presidential candidate Gary Johnson is considering jumping into the race for the U.S. Senate in New Mexico, raising the profile of a race that Democrats seeking to capture the majority in Congress had seen as a safe seat.
Johnson consultant Ron Nielson told The Associated Press on Friday that the former governor is strongly considering running if Libertarian candidate Aubrey Dunn quits the race as expected.
He is weighing it over right now, Nielson said. He doesnt want to get into a race he cant win. [ ]
During the presidential campaign, Johnson vowed to cut military spending, raising eyebrows in his home state, which relies on its three military bases to help offset its status as one of the poorest states in the nation.
As governor, Johnson was known for vetoing bill after bill before he became a national curiosity for advocating legalized marijuana.
He was nicknamed Governor Veto for 700-plus vetoes during his two terms in Santa Fe.

Yes. The weed has gotten to his brain. He was a decent governor but since then he’s nutty. He’d still be better than a Dem.
“Spoken like a true DEFEATIST.”
I do not think any So maybe if he could win it as a third party that would be again.
Unfortunately, there’s only a weak, desultory GOP nominee.
A pretty extreme leftist once called them ‘the Trotstyites of the Right. Much talk, much philosophizing, very little outcome.”
I am trying to figure this out. Are you saying after Austin gave Johnson a personal possession of great importance Johnson publicly disgrace him by treating it literally like trash? If so Johnson is both crazy and evil.
This narrative grows stranger and stranger. It would appear Mr. Johnson may have both lost his way and his soul. People who dump sick wives (John M for instance) reveals a very dark seam to their being.
He had a terrible accident and was addicted to pain meds before he weaned himself off by smoking pot.
He’s just what the Senate needs...
Agreed. Theyre all nuts.
Still smoking
As Governor, he slashed the size of state government during his term and left the state with a large budget surplus.
He used the veto more times than all other New Mexico Governors - combined. He vetoed every tax hike during his tenure.
He is very strong on the 2nd Amendment (except for rocket launchers), wants to repeal Obamacare, and promotes a balanced budget Amendment for the Constitution, and would remove marijuana from Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act. A social and foreign policy Libertarian, and fiscal Conservative.
He completed 3 Ironman competitions in Hawaii.
He lives in a house that he built himself.
He has summited Mt. Everest, and the tallest mountain on all the other continents.
In 2005, a month after announcing that he and his wife were divorcing, he fell 50 feet in a paragliding accident. He suffered multiple bone fractures, including a burst fracture to his twelfth thoracic vertebra, a broken rib, and a broken knee; this accident left him 1.5 inches (3.8 cm) shorter.
He used medicinal marijuana for pain control from 2005 to 2008. From July 2014 till January 2016, he was CEO of the marijuana company Cannabis Sativa.
LOL! That brings the memory right back.
I still don’t understand why Aubrey Dunn didn’t run as a Republican. He must be an idiot Trump hater.
How he’s out and Johnson might get in? Ugh.
Unfortunately GOP nominee Mark Rich’s name is ironic cause he doesn’t have nearly enough scratch to compete.
Rich has $690k, but he’d need at least $3 million to be competitive. With Dunn in the race with a nothingburger $31k, enough to get some ads running in Las Cruces in between psychic hotline and Adam & Eve.com at 11pm, the only purpose any Libertarian runs is electing the Democrat.
I agree. I used to like him a lot when he was Governor. Ever since he joined the Losertarian Party, he's gone off the deep end. The last straw for me is when he named big government RINO William Weld as his "Libertarian" running mate.
Gary Johnson seems to be taking a page out of the Bob Barr playbook.
“I remember hearing about this guy. Stay very clear of voting for him. Not a good guy if I remember right.”
No, he’s a very good guy. Just a pot head, with all that entails.
