China Is Losing the Trade War With Trump
Wall Street Journal ^ | 07/27/2018 | Donald L. Luskin

Posted on 07/28/2018 7:24:33 AM PDT by SpeedyInTexas

One thing came through loud and clear in President Trump’s press conference Wednesday with European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker. When they announced an alliance against third parties’ “unfair trading practices,” they didn’t even have to mention China by name for listeners to know who their target was. Cooperation between the U.S. and EU will squeeze China’s protectionist model, and even before this agreement, there’s been evidence that China is already running up the white flag.

"The fragility of China’s economy can be seen in its growth rate, which is slowing despite rising financial leverage, and in its overinvestment in commodities and real estate. The escalating trade war with the U.S. could tip China into the unknown territory of recession—and then capital flight could push it into a financial crash and depression. That would create mass joblessness in an economy that has never recorded unemployment higher than 4.3%. With that scenario in mind, the Chinese government must be wondering whether it has enough riot police."

We are taking Chinese economists into unchartered territory. Trump knows what he is doing.

Why bother posting a story that requires a subscription to read?

Why bother posting a story that requires a subscription to read?

Because some may have a subscription.

Because some may not have a subscription but find the article interesting enough to sign up

Because an article can often be found on other non-subscription sites

Because just know the trend is all anyone cares to read.

Over the past six months the Shanghai Composite Index is down a little over 19%. I’d say they are playing a weak hand at this point.

Some browsers setups bypass the subscription wall.

For example, Firefox with NoScript does not show the subscription page.

China can tip over to total collapse very easily. Their system is inherently fragile as it doesn’t have redundancies built in as they would had their government and economy matured organically.

But, but, but I heard on both CNN and MSNBC that Trump had destroyed any possibility of a favorable relationship with Britain and the EU due to his buffoon-like behavior on his recent trip to Europe. Maybe I should change channels.

😎

They have about 60 incidents a week of protests in China, on a good week.

There is a lot of downside risk for the Chinese communists, and they need to go there.

Free China!

Trump has done the right thing in imposing tariffs, One of the great benefits of his approach that the article hints at is that global investment in China which spurred their growth has come to a screeching halt that will reverse the trend and hopefully implode their economy

You are using NoScript?

Perhaps the settings are not exactly what you want.

Firefox and NoScript works fine for me on WSJ.

Just a note, to say that China is currently running the single largest bilateral trade surplus, with America.

ON RECORD.

Ever. The biggest. Last year was a new all-time record. And this year, it has continued to increase.

Every. Single. Month.

Trump is saying the right things. But China is running America into the ground.

Just saying.

I am all for Trump. He is great. Wonderful. He is the absolute best thing, we have had in America in a very long time.

But China is (still) walking all over us.

Even now.

“China is (still) walking all over us.”

The batttlefield had to be prepared, before the battle was engaged.

The US economy had to be prepared to pick up the slack from Chinese drawdowns, through tax cuts and deregulation, and companies needed lead time to prepare.

The public, policymakers and businessmen needed to be educated on just how the Chinese communists do what they do - awareness had to be raised.

“Allies” like the EU, Mexico, Canada, Japan and Korea had to be brought on board with the program first, to make it work. Otherwise, trans shipment back doors would be wide open, and too many substitution options would be open.

Now it seems like the time has come to start wrestling the trade flows away from China for real. If it is done in earnest, it would be a wrenching change for them, that risks overturning their system.
