As the clock struck midnight last Sunday, Grand Junction night owls saw redliterally.
The digital billboard looming over Rimrock Marketplace now displays a massive crimson and yellow GOP, but with the O replaced by the Russian hammer & sickle icon used by the former Soviet Union.
Mesa County progressives purchased the billboard to call out the Republican Partys refusal to challenge Trumps apparent preference for Russian denials of election interference over the unanimous assessment of United States intelligence agencies.
Grand Junction resident Anne Landman, who paid for the billboard, says its purpose is to draw attention Republicans alarming acceptance of President Trump cozying up to authoritarian dictators who disregard human rights.
While musing about a billboard on her Facebook page, a friend shared a photo of the GOP Russia design.
Landman reached out to the creator, MadDogPac of Odenton, Maryland and received permission to use the image free of charge.
Mad Dog PAC was founded in December 2017 by Claude Taylor, a former White House staffer under President Clinton.
The organization says it solicits contributions from concerned citizens to fund billboards censuring Trump, the GOP and the NRA.
The fine print on the board reads Paid for by informed citizens of Mesa County and Mad Dog Pac.
Landman says the informed citizens arent an official group of any sort, but rather friends and like-minded Mesa County residents.
The Russian GOP billboard isnt the only piece of Mad Dogs artwork to appear in Colorado.
Drivers in the Denver metro area may have seen a billboard reminding them that Mike Coffman Took $30,843 in NRA Blood Money.
The Grand Junction billboard isnt targeted at a specific elected official, but rather focuses on the Russia-friendly attitude of the Republican Party.
Furthermore, it reflects the sentiments of Mesa County progressives who are decidedly outnumbered, according to Landman.
Says Landman,
Out here on the Western slope, liberals are in the minority.
These days we are derided, criticized, called names like libtard or snowflake.
But putting this billboard up, its lifted everybodys spirits.
Its become a rallying point, energizing the left and giving people something to cheer for.
For that alone it was worth the money.
Landman paid for the first week herself and has since solicited donations via her Facebook page to extend the billboard rental beyond July 28.
As of Tuesday afternoon, Landman says she has collected over $180 towards the $265 need for a second weeks rental fee, with more promised to come.

Louise Menschs time as a romance novelist and conservative politician taught her the art of appealing to the publics worst impulses. She put those skills to use peddling optimistic conspiracy theories to dismayed liberals in the wake of the 2016 election, and for several months she did a remarkably good job. She appeared on MSNBC twice earlier this year, and in March she was interviewed on Real Time with Bill Maher and given an op-ed in the New York Times. Once she had her foot in the door with the liberal press, however, she upped the ante and began pushing the limits of their credulity. In April, she claimed the 2014 unrest in Ferguson, Missouri was a Russian plot and accused Bernie Sanders of being a Russian agent. In May, Mensch and frequent collaborator Claude Taylor, a freelance photographer who tweets under the handle @TrueFactsStated, reported that the Supreme Court was preparing Articles of Impeachment against Trump and covertly replacing him with Senator Orrin Hatch. In July, Mensch tweeted that the government was considering executing Trump and Steve Bannon. My sources say the death penalty, for espionage, being considered for @StevenKBannon. I am pro-life and take no pleasure in reporting this. Louise Mensch (@LouiseMensch) July 19, 2017 Needless to say, the vast majority of Menschs and Taylors allegations were untrue. An August report in the Guardian showed that several of the duos stories came directly from a hoaxer claiming to work for the New York Attorney Generals office. According to that hoaxer, Taylor did no vetting whatsoever and asked leading questions to support his various theories. Based on this faulty information, Mensch and Taylor claimed that Trumps modeling agency was the subject of several sealed indictments for sex trafficking, and that Bill Clinton and Rudy Giuliani were set to testify for the prosecution. In response to being outed as frauds, Mensch and Taylor dug in their heels. I dont claim to be a journalist-I am offering a feed of raw, often unfiltered, human intelligence, Taylor tweeted. For her part, Mensch claimed her scoops on the attorney generals office were accurate in every particular and accused the Guardian of being a front for Russias Federal Security Service. By this time, the mainstream liberal press had become wise to their grift and stopped allowing Mensch and Taylor a national platform, but the damage was done. Desperate to hurt Trump at any cost, MSNBC and the Times ended up legitimizing his accusations of media dishonesty. Thanks a lot.:
Where are the #Resistance phonies now?
