When I was a boy, most families had 3-4 children. Today, families have one child...if any.

What caused that? I think for the most part, it has been government policy of taxing the middle class to subsidize the lower class.

The only people who can afford to have big families are single women on welfare. The government will pay for EVERYTHING - by taxing the middle class to death.

We also need to start honoring and supporting women who stay home and raise their children rather than shaming them into the workforce.

Yep. I had four fine children, that’s all I could do.

my niece is expecting her 5th...a good Catholic family, not rich but doing pretty well..

my other niece has 5...

my cousin who got married for the first and only time to his wife of 35, also never married, have 11 children...good Catholics...

a friend at work is on her 5th as well...but I think she's Mormon...

having big families does work and all these children are well behaved and smart...

marriage USED to be considered a vocation, just like being a priest or nun....

for some it still is..

He’s smarter than the pope who said Catholics shouldn’t pop out babies like rabbits.

“What caused that? I think for the most part, it has been government policy of taxing the middle class to subsidize the lower class.”

I don’t think so. Having kids in the past wasn’t cheap either and there wasn’t any help from government then either...and houses were half the size that they are now (i.e., kids sleeping 2 to a room is unheard of these days, although it happened all the time in our past).

What changed was the FEMINIST REVOLUTION. Now having babies is simply one more ‘career option’ for women, competing with climbing the corporate ladder or starting and running a business.

Back in the day, women could be one of three things: A school teacher, a secretary, or a housewife (i.e., a mom). Since there was limited availability of work in the first two categories, most became moms.

So now it’s different. More women than men graduate college and virtually all immediately start careers. But women know that careers have to be put on hold for years if they have a kid, and put on hold even longer if they have multiple kids (and virtually ended if they have more than 5 kids)...so it pushes them towards the one trophy child option, if that.

So what is a society to do? Really only 2 options, either go back to the pre-feminist days and end career paths for woman, or do what Hungary is doing and trying to make the ‘career choice’ of being a mom at least competitive with being a career woman. Hungary is trying, Italy may try, Japan might try, but most other ‘leaders’ are simply happy to kill off their countries by flooding them with immigrants.

“...by taxing the middle class to death. ...”

The only reason that happens is because we LET them tax us to death.

Pretty sad state of affairs when the Public Servants get bigger than their britches and think they’re the Masters.

we stopped at 3 due to the cost of having more, and we did not want to take from the government anything. 7 I wanted 6 being boys.

Back in the 1970s and 1980s, the conventional wisdom was that the world was undergoing an unsustainable population explosion that would devastate the earth

People were encouraged to have less children to avert the expected demographic disaster and young people in the educated West intentionally reduced their family size in the name of social responsibility

This leveling off of the population is actually a good thing with one exception- our generous social welfare and Social Security system is a Ponzi scheme built on the predicate that that there always would be a growing pool of producers to pay for the increasing pool Social Security recipients and the growing population of welfare dependents

The demographic population decline puts lie to the Ponzi Scheme structure of our social welfare system

Left to its own devices, the population demographics would come into alignment after the baby boom generation population bubble went through its final phase and the boomers die off

Not long ago the US population was in the 200 million people range and the country was doing just fine. - better in fact than it currently does with 320 million

Our political class was wrong about the impending population explosion a generation ago and they are just as wrong g now about the need to import illiterate third worlders to try to prop up their dying social welfare system and keep the Ponzi scheme rolling
