With two of out every five member states of the United Nations not yet having paid their dues for 2018, the world body says it has never been so far behind in receiving contributions by this time of the year, and officials are looking for belt-tightening options.
Among the 81 countries yet to pay, by far the biggest amount due is the United States contribution of $591.3 million, which comprises 22 percent of the total regular budget for 2018.
Next up are Brazil ($102.7 million, or 3.8 percent of the budget), Saudi Arabia ($30.8 million, 1.14 percent) and Argentina ($23.9 million, 0.89 percent).
The U.N. asks member states by pay by early February of each year, but as of July 25, only 112 of the 193 had done so. Together, the contributions from those 112 countries amounted to $1.67 billion. The total U.N. regular budget for 2018 is $2.69 billion.
U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres told U.N. staff in a letter that he has written to the member states about the troubling financial situation facing the United Nations.

I can’t stop crying about this
Why the frak are we paying over 20% of the UN’s budget?
They say it like its a bad thing.
What the hell does this two-bit communist/socialist operation need $2.7 billion a year for? They already get free rent.
Cutoff all U.S. funding.
We pay almost $600M and provide the site. For what? To hear all the member states dissing us and Israel? The UN, per Mark Steyn, is what you get when you mix a half-gallon of ice cream with a scoop of dog poop. The resulting mixture resembles the latter more than the former. Thus we get Iran in charge of the Human Rights Commission (as one example).
It did serve a purpose back when we had a bipolar world - the US and the USSR. That world is gone.
WONDERFUL NEWS!
No; the only purpose it served back then was to empower the USSR, especially via veto power. After all, its charter was patterned after the USSR’s constitution of back then, by Alger Hiss’ design. It was always an abomination.
Quite difficult to sail into the sunset from New York.
I got an idea. Sell that property to Trump Inc, and y’all are good to go...to Kandahar.

Be great P.R. for the U.N. and great for Haiti!!!
Lagos would be a nice move.
Well, if the Morris Canal was still there, they could have done it and then make a left turn onto the Delaware Canal.
low benefit to cost ratio = low position on hierarchy of values
Hahahahaaaaa. There is no better organization to “run out of cash” than the un. So sad. So sad.
So many wonderful suggestions concerning where the UN should go!
Shut it down Danno.
Amen! I guess there really is justice in this world after all.
Each year the United States gives approximately $8 billion in mandatory payments and voluntary contributions to the United Nations and its affiliated organizations. The biggest portion of this money about $3 billion this year goes to the U.N.'s regular and peacekeeping budgets.
I notice the article, and the UN by extension, do not clarify whether the supposed $500+B owed by the US is in the mandatory or voluntary column.
I also notice that the UN does not identify what chronic deadbeat countries are in their membership - those that pay little or nothing of their share of the dues.
D O W N S I Z I N G !
Under Trump all the right numbers are getting bigger and all the wrong numbers keep getting smaller.
Ah cha cha cha cha cha... Groucho ( I think )
