Bank robber gets cold feet, then tries to open account: police
Jersey Journal ^ | July 30, 2018

A bank robber changed his mind about a heist in Bayonne Friday afternoon, but not before a teller saw the tell-tale note demanding cash, authorities said. A man walked into the Valley National Bank on Broadway, near 24th Street, just after 2 p.m. and approached a teller, Bayonne Lt. Eric Amato said. The man then passed a note to the teller demanding her to give him "all the money," Amato said.

The indecisive bank robber grabbed the note back as the teller was reading it and then he told her that he wanted to open an account, Amato said.

The man then was met by another bank employee at the bank's customer service platform, but he didn't have the proper identification to open an account, police said. He then went to another bank employee, and at the same time the customer service rep he had just spoken with was alerted by the teller of the attempted robbery, Amato said.

So, did he commit a crime or not?

It seems as though he could be charged with attempted robbery. It’s no different than someone pointing a gun at you with the intention of robbing you and then suddenly running away.

“It’s no different ...”

Big difference. None is armed robbery.

Smart crook. Take “all the money” and open an account. That way, no one could rob him and he wouldn’t have any cash as evidence.

Yeah, but he didn’t intend to commit a crime, so Comey says it’s OK.
