It came out years later that Roger Smith DID give him two interviews, which he kept in the cans (Smith apparently attended the George W. Bush School of Defending Yourself).
I lived in Moore's hometown. The locals had all kinds of less than flattering stories about him (he put stink bombs in the incense burners as an altar boy, his family got him a job at GM but he just couldn't cut actual work, became a multi-millionaire and left everyone else who helped him make that film behind to rot in Flint, etc.)
