Appeals court rules Manafort must remain jailed ahead of DC trial

An appeals court on Monday rejected Paul Manafort’s request to end his pre-trial detention ahead of the former Trump campaign chairman's second trial in Washington, D.C.

A federal judge had ordered Manafort to jail last month after special counsel Robert Mueller alleged that Manafort had engaged in witness tampering, in violation of his house arrest.

An appellate court Washington, D.C. upheld the judge's order, which said that Manafort "was unlikely to abide by any conditions the District Court might impose, including the 'most fundamental condition of release . . . that he not commit [additional] crime[s] during the period of release.’”

Mueller alleged that Manafort attempted to convince two potential witnesses to lie to investigators about his past lobbying work for Russia-linked former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych. Prosecutors argued that Manafort could continue to engage in illegal activity if he was not jailed.

The ruling on Manafort's pre-trial detention arrived the same day as he goes to trial in Virginia on bank and tax fraud charges.

Manafort is set to appear in court in D.C. in September on another series of charges, including obstructing justice, conspiracy to obstruct justice and illegal foreign lobbying.

Manafort has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

If he did try to tamper with witnesses while awaiting trial that’s a very serious chargr.

Well, when the rules are you can be jailed for talking to potential witnesses, and everyone you know or ever knew is a potential witness and THEN they throw you in solitary confinement for it... I dunno. Manifort may or may not be guilty of something, but he sure seems like a political prisoner to ME.

Our “Justice” department is clearly broken and no one in our worthless government except a few Congressmen seems to care (including, unfortunately, President Trump - who refuses to get involved).

The United States has reached a point where, if not stopped, will be a great nation no more. Where are the checks and balances? Having the AG go AWOL leaves the coup wide open to continue. Session is the disappointment of the decade.. he is the reason all this .. he could have changed it all

Doesn’t the Judge have a NAME? Is it an “Obama JUDGE”, any bets?

An outrageously ideological decision by a court biased against Republicans. How can anyone honestly believe that Manafort would go out and do something that could get him an even longer jail term? They are treating him like he was Al Capone.

Was Manafort charged with these additional ‘crimes’? I have not read where he was, so if not charged with witness tampering, why not?

...Manafort offered $10 million in property for bond But the judge was convinced he’s a flight risk?...

Manafort is accusing of evading taxes on $60 million in income.

$10 million is less than the tax on $60 million.

I am not a Mueller fan, but a higher bail might be necessary.

“Our “Justice” department is clearly broken and no one in our worthless government except a few Congressmen seems to care (including, unfortunately, President Trump - who refuses to get involved).”

I think Trump refuses to get involved for the same reason Sessions recused himself and for the same reason Sessions has not been replaced, and RR and Mueller have not been fired. Trump doesn’t want his administration’s executive branch involved in political warfare.

Obama weaponized his entire administration for political warfare and that was criminal - Trump does not want to be guilty of the same thing.

It would be far more appropriate if justice-seeking legislators, such as Jordan, Goodlatte, Meadows, etc., continued the fight from within the legislative branch, continued to hear testimony, continued to gather evidence and built a strong case independant of Trump’s executive branch. Then, and only then should the case be turned over to the DOJ, where Trump, Sessions and RR would be obligated to prosecute.

The energy behind punishing the political crimes of a corrupt Democrat administration simply can’t originate from within the executive branch of a Republican administration. Republican Trump and his cabinet must not appear the slightest bit eager to lock up their Democrat counterparts no matter how much they deserve it.

It would be seen by the voting public as a political purge.
