I worked in a hotel for 17 years and people would claim their pets were service animals to avoid paying the pet fees. Federal law prohibits asking for proof that they are indeed service animals.

When I was a kid we never dreamed of doing that, because there were no “service animals” except for real seeing eye dogs. So when we wanted to sneak our dog into the motel, I wrapped him up in a hoodie and we called him “Cousin Eddy”!

But you can ask, (1) is the dog a service animal required because of a disability? and (2) what work or task has the dog been trained to perform?
