As far as I can see, the real issue is not one of detection. The real issue is that anyone can now manufacture a gun for their own use. No registration, no background check. You want a gun? Make yourself a gun.
Second Amendment is in force and the right to keep and bear arms is a heck of a lot harder to infringe. Heads are exploding.

We made zip guns out of car antennas in Jr.High that fired .22 shorts. That was 60 years before 3D printing. Just sayin’!

Ky long rifle, Grease gun, but in 1934 the kinda put the kibosh on making full auto in the garage.
