SCOTUS gave its blessing in an Arizona case a couple of years back.

Republican Justices Elizabeth Clement and David Viviano, both Synder appointees, voted with the rats to let this on the ballot.

Seems pretty key that the GOP must hold the Sec of State office, cause the Sec of State will get to appoint the “Independents” on the commission if this shiite passes.

opponents of the measure, including Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette, argued that it was too broad a proposal to be placed on the ballot and would require the state to hold a new constitutional convention... If approved by voters in November, the measure would create an independent commission made up of four Democrats, four Republicans and five independents selected by Michigan's secretary of state.
IOW, whichever party controls the SOS controls redistricting. Thanks SMGFan.
