Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) on Wednesday celebrated his recent discovery that he has Jewish ancestry.
“Guess I need to start saying ‘L’Chaim’ now, too!” Ryan tweeted, along with a gif of him toasting with a glass of Guinness.
The clip was from a toast Ryan gave during an annual Friends of Ireland luncheon, using the Irish toast “sláinte.”
Ryan discovered his Jewish heritage during an upcoming episode of the PBS show “Finding Your Roots.”
Host Henry Louis Gates Jr. told Ryan during the show that about 3 percent of his DNA is Ashkenazi Jewish, and that he traced the ancestry back to 1531.
"You could have knocked him over with a feather and then he was very proud of it," Gates told the Associated Press about Ryan’s response. “We don't know who that Jewish person was, but we know it was on his mother's German line, which makes sense. So somebody who was a Christian German slept with a Jewish German person and that's where that came from.”
Oy vey....such chutzpah. So now it’s about being Jewish? You should live so long.
These DNA tests are not known for their accuracy.
“The conservative Jews out there” where are they? Yeah, I know there are some.

I’ve always wondered what percentage of Jewish people assimilated and married Christians over the centuries. A considerable fraction, I’d guess.

His Jewishness has to come down through his mother and 3% is basically meh, lots of people with middle European ancestry would have a bit of Jewishness in them.
Wouldn’t any normal person who learned something unexpected about his distant ancestors say something to the effect of, “Really? Well, that’s cool!” which is entirely different from thinking it matters at all.

It's what one believes, not from who one descends, that really matters.

This sounds like 23andme. Several people have been told they are Ashkenazi from 3 or 4000 years ago. Don’t know the validity.
My great grandmother was a jew named Weiss. One of my great uncles looked like Larry king. No big deal. Everyone is mixed. No such thing as a pure bloodline.
Now if someone calls ratface Ryan a dungbeetle who is in over his head, he can play the antisemite card, smudgy and shopworn as it is.
