What a special man he was.

Why can’t we require American History and Civics be taught in middle school and high school? They take our tax money, the least they could do is teach children what a precious gift they have been given. A gift purchased by the blood of patriots.

Well, I taught them in middle school, but now I’m retired. I grew up right after WWII and so knew all of these things as well as my own name. But my replacement had to learn these events in a history book and in fact really didn’t learn them until he started to teach. The cruel fact is, that time passes. What is “unforgettable” does, in fact get forgotten in a couple of generations. Guadalcanal, is barely mentioned in passing today’s history texts. The Korean War barely rates a mention.

I don’t think it’s necessarily an evil plot, although it could be, but just simply the passage of time. In the 50s, I didn’t learn as much about the Civil War as my dad did the the 30s when it was still (just barely) a part of living memory. The Viet Nam war will be the next to disappear.
