Please relate the first time that you discovered the Rush Limbaugh show (Vanity)
The Rush Limbaugh Show ^ | 2AUG18 | Vannrox

In honor of the Rush Limbaugh Show reaching 30 years old today, I would like Freepers to post and collect their memories. Memories of when they first listened to the Rush Limbaugh Show, and why you kept on listening to it.

I'll start...

It was 1993. Bill Clinton was elected and he was on television, and the radio discussing his budget. He was talking about all the great plans that he had to remove man from space, end the "boondoggle" of the "Freedom " space station, and mothball the space shuttles so the money could be used "for the children". He was promoting what a great boom to the American worker that NAFTA and extended relations with China would be. He talked about how he was going to restore ethics to Washington, DC.

Every show and every radio station was gushing with praise for this man. It was sickening. The women looked like they were fawning and near fainting near him. The men was nodding vigorously and everyone was talking in excited tones about how America will lead the world by undoing Reaganism.

There was only one man who had a contrary view. That was Rush Limbaugh.

So while the rest of America praised the new America led by Clinton, and was looking forward to the new trade agreements with NAFTA and China, I was huddled in my living room, listening to Rush on the radio on a dark and stormy West Virginia night. Only Rush gave voice to how I felt.

It was 1991. My husband and I were driving somewhere. We were newlyweds. He turned on Rush. We have listened ever since. I’m pretty sure husband listened to Rush before then. Nowadays, we do not listen as much because we are otherwise occupied during Rush’s three hours. But when we find ourselves driving around during Rush’s show, we listen. It seems like when we lived in Arizona, Rush’s show was tape delayed there during part of the year. Maybe I am crazy and misremembering.

Small world ain’t it.
I was working with a group of staunch democrats. Having Rush on made them leave me alone. I got much more work done.
Do you remember what/who was on before and after Rush back then?

Alan Colmes came on after. Pat Buchanan’s show preceded Rush’s time slot. Chris Matthews was a frequent guest and seemed sane in those days.

It was in ‘88, I was helping my grandfather with something and he had the radio tuned to the local talk radio station (WRKO). Listened to him off and on the rest of the summer right up until I joined the military. Only chances I had to listen after I joined was when I was home on leave, or for the short period of time he was on for an hour a day on AFN radio in Germany.

Today I happened to catch the first part of where President Trump called in, it made me think back to the first time I heard Rush.

I was searching the radio dial in 1988 looking for conservative talk. Keith Rush was on one station, Jack Wyle on another. Picked up Rush on WTIX the mighty 690. Don’t think it was the first day but it was at a time when he was on only two hours. I got to go to two of his Rush to Excellence tours. The first was at the Superdome. It was at a conference room. Small and intimate setting. Admission was the purchase of a ticket to a college baseball game which entitled me to see the great Maharishi.

I caught Rush in the first hour of the New York show on WABC — in July of 1988. I was listening to find out who was replacing Joy Brown. I was surprised (and pleased) by what I heard.

The New York show lasted for a while after the National show started. It was basically the same as the National show, but some local content was included. (Remember the segment that was co-anchored with Kathleen Mahoney!)

Later I learned that WABC was necessary to break Rush’s Sacramento contract, since he had a clause that he could leave Sacramento if he had an offer from a larger market. And the ad buyers wanted a show that came from a LARGE market — i.e. New York City.

Congrats on the 30+ years.

In 1990 my husband told me about hearing him on the radio. I started listening, then saw him on TV on a late night show as a guest. The hostess was hateful, and I was appalled at how she treated him. I called into his show the next day and got on the air! I have been a faithful listener ever since.

1988. My boss said,”hey you gotta listen to this guy!” So I did. At first, as a woman, OH MY GOD! This guy is way out there...I mean, wow, he is REALLY outspoken and, man, he says stuff nobody else would dream of saying!

I fell head over heels. I’ve been a loyal listener all these years. Can’t stand to miss him. He’s a treasure.

Also, I went to Dan’s Bake Sale and was lucky for that opportunity to see him.

Now if I’d just have the chance to marry him and live happily ever after things would be cool. Wait…what?! He’s already taken. ;)

Congratulations to Rush! The real Great One!

1989. Was in the 4th grade and grandma picked me up after school. She was listening to Rush and he was doing a “Condom Update” and playing this song: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=sQVLsvZcr34

Hey, Grandma what’s that all about? She quickly turned off the radio and told me I didn’t need to be listening to things like that. I’ve listened ever since...

Yes! I remember his show. I seem to recall that it came on around 9 or 10pm, and was on one of the local UHF stations.

Do not think that Rush won't see your entries. He slums here on FR. He really does. ...

What does that mean?

I was listening to the radio news and they were talking about Dan’s bake sale in Ft Collins(1993?). I lived in Denver then and still do. I thought this Rush Limbaugh guy must be pretty popular to have that many people show up in Ft Collins so I tried listening, totally expecting an extremist. I am still listening every day if possible and heard the call with DJT today. It was great!

Great idea for a vanity, by the way.

I was driving back from Illinois to Aurora, Colorado after visiting family for the 1991 Christmas holidays, with wife and kids in the car. It was the middle of the night and I was scanning the radio dial to find something to keep me awake. The Rush Limbaugh show for the day was playing on rerun. His voice hit me like an epiphany, and I was hooked. Here was something completely new; someone who unapologetically said the the things I believed, with confidence and humor. I have been a loyal fan ever since. Rush, if you are reading this, thank you, and know that I will be listening until you retire, or I give up the ghost.

I am an original listener. I heard Rush’s very first show on KFBK in Sacramento, in Oct. 1984. I remember “Charlie the socialist” also one of Rush’s original regular callers on the show (God rest his soul.)

He is still the mainstay of their programming, without Rush they are just another station on the AM band.

Tom Sullivan another KFBK’er from Rush’s time there, is now on Fox business, and Fox radio where he continues to host a program similar to his original program, although I am starting to think that he is slipping into more and more liberal points of view on some subjects. I think he is slowly being captured by NYC values, although I still have great admiration for him. His economic and financial knowledge is top notch.

Alan Colmes....the guy has always made me want to throw up.
Its a wonder I didn’t remember Buchanan. I guess memory IS the first thing to go.
Chrissy Matthews seeming sane was an acting job for the ages!

KFBK? in the fall of 1990.

I was working in the Davis CA area. One of these guys I was working on made comment re: Rio Linda people. When I asked why he was picking on a rural town he said it was Rush who says it. Listened to his show and then had to drive out to Rio Linda to see if it was really as bad as he talked about on his shows.

Doesn’t seem like it had been that long. Time flies and the spiral has continued.

LOL - Rush's always welcome here... slumming or not. What a good man - we've been bless he's had our back for decades. Conservatives would not be where we are without him. God Bless you Rush... you made the difference when it mattered.

Let me school you. Rush Limbaugh has been a Freeper since Free Republic was first established. I can not comment on how active he is, but he has commented on posts, but he does not use his real name.
