The entire police force in Blandford, Massachusetts, walked off the job Monday and pointed to low wages, “cruisers that don’t work,” and bullet proof vests that did not fit, among other things. They announced their departure via Facebook, writing:
Attention Blandford residents: If you have a police, fire or medical emergency, please continue to call 911 as you normally would. Until further notice, please call the Russell State Police Barracks at 413-862-3312 if you need any other police services. The entire Blandford Police Department resigned this evening, effective immediately.
The Boston Globe reports that Blandford police force consisted of “three officers and interim police chief, Roberta Sarnacki.”
WWLP reports Sarnacki indicated “officers [had] been working with cruisers that don’t work, bulletproof vests that are not fitted to them or might be expired, poor radio communications, inadequate staffing and improper wages.”
Blandford Selectboard Chair Cara Letendre responded to the resignations by saying:
For the past two months, Interim Chief Sarnacki has done a fine job with our police officers and our police department. It is unfortunate that she led this officer walk out as she would have been considered as one of our candidates for Acting Chief position as we pursue the future opportunities with our police force. We have had multiple public meetings with our police force and have offered them the opportunity to engage and provide their opinions for the direction of the force.

Why would you even need police in the leftist utopia of MassiveAwesome?
When will jobsworth cops who obey mayor and chief orders to avoid enforcing the law on immigration and other matters walk off the job?
Why do they need bulletproof vests in Blandford?
This is a sleepy hill town where the most frequent crime is not getting the car inspection done because they have to travel to another place to get them.
Many towns in their area rely on the State Police. No one will notice. Except the town budget manager, who will see a surplus in the salary accounts.
This is simply related to an upcoming merger, according to the comments I read from another paper.
Obvious that they don’t need a local police force....of 4??
“”””””””””For the past two months, Interim Chief Sarnacki has done a fine job with our police officers and our police department. It is unfortunate that she led this officer walk out “”””””””””””
So it was a chick that started it and lead it. Maybe they should hire a chief who deals with things logically and rationally instead of stomping out like a little girl.
Let some illegals take the job.
You’d be surprised at what can happen in any town.
My son just told me about an officer responding to a domestic call. He knocked on the door and the guy inside immediately fired through the door, the officer hadn’t even identified himself yet. He took two shots in the chest- bulletproof vest saved his life.
You never know when you’re going to encounter crazy.
Blandford and Chester had discussed for a minimum of three months, the idea of a combined force. Six miles apart, it makes sense. I think these cops realized that their days were numbered, and did their best to blame the town for it’s woes.
So if she had played along with the politicians, she would have been considered for a promotion from interim police chief to acting police chief?
Clueless politicians may be why she left.
not knowing the situation. I would not judge the person...if equipment is not working and the city is not willing to pat for there police department maybe walking off is the best thing she can do for the city so they take care of the problems.
How was it the business of police officers who walked off their jobs to advise anyone what to do in an emergency? I would guess the controlling authorities in the county along with 911 director would make the determination. Just thinking here.
This is why you NEVER disarm.
Low-wage cops are to me a frightening scenario. You end up scraping the bottom of the barrel for applicant quality, and you almost guarantee corruption will take place when your guys struggle to pay their rent.
Maybe a town of 1200 people really doesn’t need a police force.
At least the 911 phone number still works...
That would be one police officer for every 300 inhabitants.
They wouldn’t need cruisers that work. They could just walk to scene of the crime 40 feet away from headquarters.
Most small towns like that have the Sheriff to take care of stuff.
