Trouble for Prosecution: Mueller team signals it may not call its star witness against Manafort

There are definite signs of big trouble in the prosecution of Paul Manafort for crimes unrelated to Russia or the Trump campaign.  Yesterday saw the judge in the case, T.S. Ellis, rebuke the prosecution for seeking to incite class envy and jealousy among jurors. But for its part, the prosecution let slip a shocking revelation: that it may not even call to the stand its star witness against Manafort, his former business partner Rick Gates. Jeff Mordock reports in The Washington Times:

The stunning disclosure came as prosecutor Uzo Asonye was questioning an FBI agent about a financial document apparently authored by Mr. Gates. Judge T.S. Ellis III interrupted the testimony to ask why the agent was discussing the memo and not its supposed author.

“He may testify in this case, your honor, he may not,” Mr. Asonye said.

Journalists and others immediately scrambled out of the courtroom to the report the revelation, amusing Judge Ellis.

“That’s news to me and about 25 others who scurried out of here like rats on a sinking ship,” Judge Ellis shot back.

Mr. Asonye attempted to backtrack, telling Judge Ellis that evidence presented will determine which witnesses testify.

But that only elicited a sharp rebuke from the judge.

“You know who you are going to call,” he said. “If you are going to call Mr. Gates, this is a waste of time.”

The prosecutors may wish to shield Gates from cross-examination by defense attorneys, perhaps fearful that he could wreck their theories of guilt.

More and more, Mueller and his team of misfit failures are being exposed. There is a track record there that consistently points to malpractice and ethical misconduct.

I feel bad for Mueller and Rosy-Stains victims.

Rumor is, the defense is going to call Rick Gates to testify. Didn’t Mueller already give him a deal to testify for the prosecution?

After the past 20 months, why would any juror believe the testimony of an FBI agent?

He has the evidence that the first investigation couldn’t surface. Without him there would not be a prosecution. Plus I think he might testify that some of the evidence was unlawfully obtained.

Things in court seem to be happening fairly quickly. I just heard Ellis was reported as saying that this trial may be over quicker than people may think....

Can someone please explain WHY this Mueller lunatic’s Idiocy Road Show has not been shut down?

It’s obviously a corrupt and fantastically expensive boondoggle and ego trip.

What would be the fallout if Mueller loses this case? I see on Twitter that the liberals are squawking that Trump is guilty of jury tampering with his tweet yesterday. The left wing media tampers with juries day in and day out on that logic.

I do not care if you support or don't support Manafort, that is one funny line. Sounds like something Harry would have said to Dan.

It’s a marginal case, and they knew that several months ago. The jury is sitting there and watching this unfold. I still think it’s a hung-jury at the end.

Easy question to answer. It is Northern VA. They are all Hillary supporters -- true believers that anything and anyone Trump related is guilty.
