They CAN fire her ass anytime, easily. She engaged in public behavior detrimental to the company interests. employment contracts are full of such clauses. I have no doubt about that.
I also expect this woman will never work at NY Times - but NY Times is entering a desperate but quiet ass-covering mode. Their first response is: "what's the big deal?" but they know a real shit-storm is coming.
