For two decades, Joseph James Pappas has held a grudge against the Houston cardiologist who performed the surgery that left his mother dead on the operating table, police say.
Pappas, 62, planned Dr. Mark Hausknecht's killing-- apparently over his mother's death -- and last month followed the doctor as he rode his bicycle to work at Houston Methodist Hospital, according to authorities.
Both men were on their bikes on July 20 when Pappas rode past Hausknecht before turning around and fatally shooting him, police said.
The prominent surgeon and former cardiologist for President George H.W. Bush was found near a construction site with hundreds of workers, but the equipment was loud enough to mask the sounds of gunfire.

So..... How did he get caught?
Think of something for 20 years...
Ought to be able to come up with a way to get over it.
He certainly should not have been a suspect after 20 years.
over it S/B away with it
I believe he was caught on a red-light or security video, and recognized.
Hasn't been caught yet. Surveillance video led to an ID, and that led to a search of the suspects home and solid evidence he was the shooter.
Have they actually caught him yet?
Maybe he wanted free ObaMaoCare for the rest of his life in Club Fed. I’m guessing he doesn’t have much saved for retirement resources. Carrying around a grudge and planning a murder for 20 years can’t be much more helpful to your finances than it is to your physical or mental health.
Moral of the story: Ban Bicycles.
They will find him dead. Suicide, 2 shots to the head style.
Whatever health care he gets will be courtesy of the Texas Department of Corrections. This was a state crime.
If they didn’t catch him how do they know for sure what his motive was? Maybe the surgeon cut him off. Bicyclists are a sensitive lot.
They found evidence at his apartment that suggested he was VERY interested in the doctor. But the article also says he has a wife (I assume he lives with her). She may have ratted him out as the killer and told the police what she thought?
The only important difference is that the guy in Boston waited months rather than years to exact "justice".
Apparently evidence found at his home showed he'd been planning this for some time.
Time to Pay the Piper.
“Pappas”
That’s all you need to know.
Just because the patient died, that doesn’t necessarily mean a doctor did something wrong. Sometimes they are already in a fragile state, and the procedure pushes them into the next step, which was going to happen anyway.
If someone held onto to the compulsion to blame others for his mother’s death, I suspect it may be due to residual feeling of guilt. Look back, and one may discover incidents where this shooter was accused of mistreating his mother. He is frantic to transfer the self imposed guilt.
