I've witnessed (and participated in) some interesting aircraft maneuvers, especially during airshow practices. Even though this bird was empty for the loop, it stills ranks up near seeing the SR-71 Blackbird launch, watching the AC-130 gunship live fire the 105mm cannon, and getting buzzed by a B-1 moving low and fast.
I was out on the Hot Pad at Grand Forks AFB with my men as we unloaded a Minuteman III from a C-141.
Between the generators and the hydraulic winches running it was quite noisy, then the ground started to shake then there was a huge rumbling sound. My men let go of the winch buttons and ran away from the aircraft as they thought somehow the missile has come off the cradle inside the shipping container.
I remained and turned around to see two of our B-1B bombers fly over the runway about 150 feet off the ground with the wings swept back and full afterburner on. They pulled up nearly vertical and then roll over then towards the west.
They had just returned after winning the SAC Bomb Comp and were celebrating.
