Bill Would Grant New Yorkers 3 Months Paid Bereavement Leave To Mourn Loss Of Loved Ones

August 2, 2018 at 7:59 pm

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Lawmakers want every worker in New York to get three months paid bereavement leave to mourn the loss of a loved one.

But many business owners say it could be crippling. Will Gov. Andrew Cuomo sign it into law?

The bill is sponsored by Sen. Richard Funke, of upstate Batavia, whose son died.

“I’ve experienced the pain of losing a child. The grief can be unpredictable and overwhelming,” he said in a statement. “No employee should have to fear losing their job in order to take the time they need to mourn.”

Sen. David Carlucci, of Clarkstown, is cosponsoring the bill, which quietly passed at the end of the legislative session and is awaiting action by the governor.

“We need to make it as easy as possible, be humane and understand the real cost involved in losing a loved one,” said Carlucci.

The bill covers the death of a spouse, domestic partner, child, parent, in-law, grandparent or grandchild.

The law, if passed, phases in what workers can collect between 50 to 67 percent of the average weekly wage — $680 a week.

But Greg Greenwood, owner of Bleeker Street Pizza, said it could cripple mom and pop stores.

Such bills should FORCE the state to pay the cost and NOT the employer.

Look at the bill. All workers are taxed another 1% to pay for it. MORE redistribution of wealth!

Hey Andy, I worked for New York State, can you make it retro-active so I can get paid for the extra time I wasn’t allowed to take when my mother, and brother died back in 1990 and 1995?

Jeez, it’s bad enough to be ruled from Manhattan. Batavia is in the heart of cow country. Rural upstate western New York.

“The bill covers the death of a ............ domestic partner”

Can I help it if I date people who are in ICU? See you in three months!

Yep, but to high of a percentage that leave these States take their loony ideology with them. Zero capability to understand cause/effective.

Lawmakers want every worker in New York to get three months paid bereavement leave to mourn the loss of a loved one.

The Rats better be careful with this one, the mortality rate for DemoRat "loved ones" is certain to take a jump, after all, only four a year and the few that work wouldn't have to.

On the upside, dead DemoRat "Loved Ones" will continue to vote, ...DemoRat.

A dead pet is good for only one month unless it was seeing eye dog.

My Wife received four days bereavement when my Mom died last month. She is responsible and has six weeks vacation accrued to back that up. ( I'm self employed so I expect nothing) I can see situations we're that isn't enough, a week, two weeks max then FMLA kicks in. Three months paid, joke and it will pass.

Three months? Where did they come up with that?

Once the funeral is over, the best therapy is to return to the workplace.

So I only have to have 4 ‘loved ones’ per year.

I can come up with that.
