The founders were brilliant in their skepticism. They knew what kind of misery a monarchy brings about. They also saw that not everyone was on the same side in the war. Some sided with the king ("Democrats"), some were neutral ("Independents"), and some loved freedom so much they were willing to fight for it and die for it ("Republicans").
So far, the Constitution has held at bay those who want a monarch or monarch powers (Democrats).
