In Venezuela's hospitals, eat at your own risk

Hardly anybody likes hospital food but in Venezuela, it's so awful -- monotonous, starchy diets cooked in filthy conditions, and newborns fed intravenous solution for lack of baby formula -- that experts call it an actual health risk.

That was true in the Soviet Union, too. Patients were expected to wash their own bedding in the bucket of dirty water left st the foot of their beds. Doctors made house calls, but they re-used equipment like catheters and syringes. There was a huge black market in medical supplies, because people would do whatever they could to avoid Soviet hospitals.

This is true in the best run hospital(I've been in more of my share)but the food is generally bad tasting but as a whole it won't kill ya. I believe they do this to "inspire' you to leave the hospital. ASAP.

Back in WW2 I've heard stories that a pack of American cigarettes and a chocolate bar would open a few "female doors", too.

I had two hospital stays recently.

On a liquid diet, the liquids were good. They included ice cream

On a solid diet, the food was also good. I was fed what I ordered from the offered menu

My last “visit” I had the poor little nurses(who were outstanding and I appreciated them very much)running back and forth to the freezer for ice cream and pop siciles. Just couldn’t stomach anything else. (Stomach problems)

The nursing staff, bless their hearts were very professional and did all they could.(can’t say that about my doctors(spit)
After I left I sent the nurses a flower arrangement and a package of goodies.
