Sen. Joe Donnelly (D-Ind.), one of the most vulnerable Senate Democrats facing reelection in the fall, said he is "fine" with providing more money for the U.S.-Mexico border wall that President Trump has long touted as a staple of his hard-line immigration policies.
"Im fine with providing him some more," Donnelly told Politico. "I actually voted for border wall funding three different time. Im fine with that."
Donnelly also said that he is "fine" with approving up to $5 billion for the wall.
Trump in recent weeks has threatened a government shutdown over full funding for his border wall, denouncing the Senate's proposal to provide $1.6 billion for the wall. The president reportedly will push for the full $25 billion to fund the project all at once.
GOP leaders in the House and Senate have discounted the chances of a shutdown over the wall.
Donnelly told Politico he believes Congress should approve more funding in order to avoid a shutdown. He said he does not want a shutdown "under any circumstances."
Donnelly's opponent Mike Braun has hit the moderate Democrat over his immigration policies, framing him as a weak alternative to Trump's aggressive stance on immigration.
An ad released on Tuesday says Donnelly has "waffled" on supporting the border wall. Braun said Donnelly was only backing increased funding for the wall because it is an election season.
Multiple Senate Democrats are facing tough battles for reelection this year in states that went to Trump in the 2016 presidential election. Many of these Democrats are working to prove they are independent of their congressional leadership in Washington, even as Republicans seek to tie them to Dem leaders while casting them as obstructionists.
The Government Accountability Office in a report this week found the Trump administration has not conducted a full analysis of the border wall costs.
This guy is unserious.
He is a lying sack of poop. RATs are gonna start acting okay with things so that they get reelected. Then they will stab you in the back.
This guy has lost and knows it.
Rush always says, they have to lean right just to get elected. If they were totally honest with what they believe very few elected.
OK, I trust him. Eyes rolling
Is He waffling on Kavanaugh too?
“until it’s time to vote.”
I’m fine, it’s just a flesh wound
Donnelly got elected because we threw Dick Lugar out of office after rot had set in around him (RINO). The conservative that ran for the seat said something stupid and the media crucified him. We ended up with Donnelly. In Indiana, a pet rock should win the senate seats under the GOP ticket. You gotta work to lose to a democrat here in the Senate.
Donnelly should be toast. BUT, the “non-politician” guy, Braun, has been a business owner and registered Democrat for many years. He said he had to do that to get along with the politicians in his district. But his district has been republican. He beat Todd Rokita, a long time, pretty reliable conservative (not perfect). Rokita got beat strictly because he was a long time politician (IMO). I’ll be supporting and voting for Braun, only because of what he campaigned on.
Braun will be a question mark as far as conservative voting goes. But so was Trump. We’ll have to see.
If Donnelly doesn’t back Kavanuagh I think he’s done. But I want him out either way.
He knows his buddies in the Senate will prevent it from ever coming to a vote.
How about the $25 billion that President Trump wants, you weasel?
He’s running scared and lying through his teeth.
No Democrat or Bush League Republican wants a dime spent on border security.
He is fine with it until JUST AFTER the election...
The Manchin gambit. Feint right at election time, then vote left for the next 5 years.
Why did Indiana ever vote for a Democrat Senator to begin with?
He will be given permission to vote for funding to save his seat IF it comes up. We need 60 votes and won’t get near that because Mitch is still playing by the enemies rules. I don’t see a vote happening because Mitch doesn’t want funding for the wall his owners in the Chamber of Controlled Commerce don’t want a wall and after all by God they paid good money for McWeasal!
