McCaskill: Supreme Court Vote ‘Not a Political Winner’
Roll Call ^ | 8/8/2018 | Bridget Bowman

The current Supreme Court vacancy is expected to be a central topic in the Missouri Senate race — at least if the GOP nominee has anything to say about it.

Attorney General Josh Hawley, who won the GOP primary as expected Tuesday, has already been using the high court vacancy to make his case against Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill. But McCaskill said Wednesday that some Missourians will be upset no matter how she votes on President Donald Trump’s nominee, Brett Kavanaugh.

“This is not a ‘political winner,’” McCaskill told reporters on a conference call Wednesday morning. She said the calls and emails coming into her office are evenly split between those who want her to vote for and against the judge.

“There is no political calculation on this vote,” McCaskill said. “No matter how I vote there’s going to be a lot of people who are not going to be happy with it.”

McCaskill did not join a trio of other red state Democrats to back Trump’s first Supreme Court pick, Judge Neil Gorsuch. She pointed out that she has supported a number of Trump’s Cabinet and lower court nominees.

McCaskill said she has a clear case to make to voters over the next three months: she’s willing to buck her party, and GOP Attorney General Josh Hawley is not.

“I’ve taken some very difficult positions against my party ... but i kept at it because I felt it was the right thing to do,” McCaskill said. “I think that’s the big difference that people are going to see with these two candidates.”

So McCaskill believes Missourians are evenly split over wanting constitutionalists on the courts or ultra liberals. She voted against Gorsuch and even tried to block him from getting a vote at all, now she's probably going to vote against Kavanaugh as well - or have to explain her hypocrisy in why she would do a switcheroo in an election year and only represent her constituents when she's running for re-election.

I give her credit for being right about this. No matter how she votes she’s screwed.

Look. She’s made up her mind just like the other 99. She DOESN’T support Gorsech but she will VOTE to confirm. The only way she will change her vote is if it’s ok politically to do so.

McCaskill won 6 years ago by carefully selecting her opponent, a dummie who could not win a general election and spent several millions of dollars to help him win the primary. She wiped the floor with him. 12 years ago she enjoyed an evenly divided electorate in Missouri and squeeked out a win. No such luck this year, but she has decided that she can win with the combination of Kansas City, St. Louis, and Columbia voters and win yet again. I don’t think that it will happen.

However, Hawley better check his bed every night to make sure that there is no dead woman or live boy hiding under the sheets with Claire outside the bedroom with a TV crew.

Well, heck, it’s a tough vote for a liberal?? We pay these senators very well, to take the tough votes. Do they expect being in Washington is just all cocktail parties and schmooze with elites? We pay her to make tough decisions, and then justify those decisions to her voters.

Her focus groups have told her that if she tries to lynch Kavanaugh like she did with Gorsuch, that will cost her voters and supporters.

She knows they are not evenly split...

She also knows she will likely lose re-election either way...

Sounds to me like she’s laying the ground work to negotiate the best outcome from the democrats after she’s voted out,

She’ll vote against as long as the dem leadership make sure she’s set up for life for it

Our awesome President Trump will give her a dose before she’s voted out. Her name is toast.

Trump country, yes. That ensures little.

Yesterday the majority repubs voted down a Right to Work initiative, clear evidence that the political matrix of dems/repubs/liberal/conservative is rogue in Missouri.

Your tagline.

Name a country where the citizens are more free than we are.

Sounds like she’ll SAY she will vote yes - IF the vote is before the election. But will actually vote “NO” if it comes after the election.

She’s an ultra liberal masquerading as a moderate. I really hope she loses in November. Bill Nelson is another who fits this description in a red state.

At least Donnelly in Indiana and Heitkamp in North Dakota really are fairly moderate. McCaskill certainly isn’t.
