Simply put them in an airtight chamber, pump in pure nitrogen and wait. Once the person is well and truly dead, exchange the nitrogen for standard atmosphere and remove the body. No muss, no fuss, and no deadly chemicals involved. The condemned won't even know he's dead until he meets his new roomates in hell. The nitrogen can be vented out the roof with no ill effects.

As emotionally satisfying as it may be to make the scum to be executed suffer, it's not necessary and counterproductive.

Again, the fact that there is any controversy over methods of execution is because both sides apparently want the controversy to continue for their own reasons.
