President Trump on Saturday tweeted that he condemns "all types of racism and acts of violence" ahead of the one-year anniversary of the deadly "Unite the Right" rally in Charlottesville, Va.
Trump has been under intense pressure to condemn last year's violence and speak out against white supremacists organizing an anniversary rally set to take place on Sunday.
"The riots in Charlottesville a year ago resulted in senseless death and division," he tweeted. "We must come together as a nation. I condemn all types of racism and acts of violence. Peace to ALL Americans!"
The president faced significant criticism over his response to the white supremacist rally last August that left one counter-protestor dead, saying that there was blame" as well as "very fine people" on "both sides" of the rally. While Trump does not repeat that claim in his Saturday tweet, he also does not assign blame for racism.
The second iteration of the white nationalist gathering is set to take place in Washington, D.C., this weekend. Events are also planned in and around Charlottesville, where authorities have declared a state of emergency in preparation.
White supremacist groups gathered last year to protest the removal of a statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee. They were met by hundreds of counter-protesters, and the competing protests quickly devolved into street clashes.
Heather Heyer, 32, was killed when a white supremacist drove his car into a crowd of counter-protesters. Two Virginia state troopers also died as they were responding to the violence when their helicopter crashed.
D.C. officials are already taking security precautions ahead of Sundays protest to prevent a repeat of such violence. Police Chief Peter Newsham and Mayor Muriel Bowswer (D) announced Thursday that guns would not be allowed at the rally even for gun owners with legal permits and that protesters and counter-protesters would be kept separate.
According to the narrative of the left, white people are expect to take any and all abuse, verbal and physical, without fighting back because they deserve it.
People who aren't White Nationalist should have some fun too... without getting called names.
The Charlottesville debacle was an affront to real conservatives everywhere. Embarrassing and only fed the left. Not cool.
If you lie down with dogs, you could get called a flea. LOL!
While the MSM has their cameras on the right looking for people defending themselves and telling the world they're the ones causing violence, we need to have our cameras focused on the left causing the violence.
G-d I love this man . . .
In other words, Trump verifies what he has ALWAYS believed.
The DUmp’s torn between saying there’s no way Trump would write something like that, to saying Trump did it again and won’t condemn white racism. lol
There are older Democrats who want to respect their past, even with all its blemishes. And there are younger Democrats who want to wipe the slate clean and move on, even to the point of pretending it never happened.
There are good people on both sides of that argument; Thats what Trump said and it is true.
As for the violence between Nazis, Antifa, and BLM, that’s all just fascist-on-fascist violence. And for the most part it is kabuki theater. Its all for the cameras. There aren’t any good people in that fight, and there aren’t even any serious people. Just nutcases acting out some weird fantasy roll-play.
