Norfolk Southern apologizes, says won't use 'bait truck' tactic again (CHIRAQ)

The Norfolk Southern Railway apologized on Friday for its controversial "bait truck" operation in Chicago's Englewood neighborhood and said it wouldn't use the tactic again.

In a letter in response to a Tribune editorial, Herbert Smith of Norfolk Southern acknowledged that the undercover operation “eroded trust between law enforcement and the community.”

“We sincerely regret that our actions caused further unease, and we don’t plan to use this method in the future,” wrote Smith, the railroad’s manager of community and legislative relations in Illinois, Iowa and Michigan.

The joint investigation with Chicago police — dubbed "Operation Trailer Trap" — used a truck loaded with goods that was left parked near 59th Place and Princeton Avenue in Englewood as a lure for potential thieves.

The probe, however, came under fire from the American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois and others after video footage of the operation went viral.

Despite the railroad’s apology, Smith said in the letter to the editor that community residents “deserve more context” about the investigation he said was prompted by ongoing cargo theft from parked and locked containers and trailers in that area.

Those break-ins included thefts of guns and ammunition “that found their way in the local community,” he said.

Bait stations are commonly used to attract animals. There’s no problem here.

"Bait stations are commonly used to attract animals. There’s no problem here."

And it was workin' in ChiTown too. But the animals they were attracting happened to be a protected species so of course the DemonRat controlled pow-lice are terribly sorry about catching obvious criminals.

Go back to what you do best Southside.....killing each other.

Criminals don’t erode trust...they ignore it altogether.

Is the right to steal now a human right or at least a black feral right? Apologizing??? Maybe they should pass laws that allow lethal force to be used in defense of property, instead.

This is all that you need to know about the ACLU to understand that they do not have the best interests of America or her citizens as their agenda.

The ACLU still exists?

They have no concern about the FIB fabricating a dossier to obtain a FISA warrant to spy on people?

They have no concern about the harassment of people in restaurants, refusal of service, etc. because of their employer or party politics?

They have no concern about shadowbanning and blacklisting of people from itunes, amazon, youtube, and facebook for non-violent, non-racist, non-profane speech? Look to Prager University’s treatment online, not just Alex Jones.

In the late 60’s Detroit had STRESS units which were highly successful until Coleman Young put an end to them.....

Commentary from the “Second City Cop” blog on this stupidity:

“Reverse Stings are completely legal and accepted police tactics. If you don’t cut open a trailer seal and unlawfully enter and remain within while intending to commit a theft, YOU CAN’T BE CHARGED! It’s like an actual law. Imagine that - obey the law and nothing happens.

“But now, newly emboldened burglars can cut open train cars and parked trucks and loot with the knowledge that whatever they break into isn’t being watched by cops. And the cost to everyone else can be calculated in million of dollars. And you can thank Kim Foxxx and the ACLU for starters”.

For those unfamiliar, Kim Foxx is the current Cook County State’s Attorney, one who is roundly criticized for (among other things) her reluctance to pursue charges against perps in (among other things) gun crimes, especially those in particular demographic groups. Rahm and his minions will b*tch about the need for more gun laws, but won’t say a word about the reluctance of local prosecutors to use the laws we have to put away the local scum.

Shame on Norfolk Southern for highlighting the lawlessness in that area. Every time I see a truck parked along the street, I immediately think of how I can bust open the doors and take the cargo.....well, not really but if I did, I doubt anyone would apologize for tempting me beyond my control.

This is part of the response to the repeated theft of railroad freight that has been going on in Chicago for forever.

I remember reading last year about a bunch of guns being lifted off a freight car sitting in a rail yard and showing up in local crimes. At the time the locals were demanding "something be done to save their community".

I read another article yesterday- I think this is the same incident-and this "bait truck" is part of the attempt to respond to the locals demand for action.

If this is the same matter, the truck was loaded with Nike athletic shoes-apparently, the locals consider this underhanded and this action is "setting them up".

I bet if the truck had been loaded with work boots, nobody would have bothered it.
