Whether the nations $1.5 trillion student-debt problem represents a crisis is a matter of debate among policy makers and experts. But ask regular voters what they think and the answer seems pretty clear.
More than half of Republicans, 67% of Independents and 71% of Democrats agree that student debt is a crisis, according to a recent poll of 1,000 voters conducted by Lake Research Partners and Chesapeake Beach Consulting on behalf of Americans for Financial Reform and the Center for Responsible Lending, two consumer advocacy organizations.
Its pretty clear that regardless of political orientation, people see it not just as a problem, but as a crisis-level problem, said Alexis Goldstein, a senior policy analyst at Americans for Financial Reform, a nonprofit organization advocating for stricter financial regulation.
That regular Americans are coming down on one side of that distinction is more important than simply semantics. Among wonks and academics its a question whether student debt constitutes a crisis for our nation and our economy broadly or simply a crisis for specific individuals or groups. Experts on different sides of that divide tend to have different approaches to solving our student loan problems.
But the poll released this week suggests the debate is going on separately from how Americans experience student debt, said Mark Huelsman, a senior policy analyst at Demos, a left-leaning think tank. And indeed, there are many reasons why voters may be feeling anxious over student debt.
Over the past several years, tuition went up while wages stayed stagnant, pushing families to spend more of their limited income on paying for college. And young people who graduated into the recession or post-recession economy have struggled to find jobs with salaries high enough to make their debt manageable.

It’s a debt crisis created by liberals, so that they can “fix it” with “free” tuition.
So, yeah, both Repubs and ‘Rats agree its a crisis.
The real crisis is that ‘Rats keep creating problems for which they have some Anti-American/Anti-Capitalist/Socialistic response to pull out of their Agenda hats.
The universities that took their money for indoctrination should reimburse them.
Were they forced to go to college?

Here’s an idea...get a degree in something useful instead of gender studies and French Literature.
A tech student will get a great job in a short time without a lifetime of debt.
For a while, perhaps...until the job is either given to an H1B worker or simply outsourced overseas.
Ironically, one of the ways that's prevented is when state govt's (or the fed) mandate the tech company they are contracting with employ U.S. citizen workers and/or require them to be "on site."
Universities are responsible. Graduate with lots of debt and a degree where there is no reasonable chance for income to pay the loan back. Universities should endorse the loans. If they are not repaid, the university should pay them.
Stop the tax payer funding of BIG ACADEMIA.
I was talking about a technical school grad in the building trades and many other fields.

These kids are taking these loans and grants and most of the money goes to non-educational needs like housing and food and partying. Which is why these universities keep jacking up their rates knowing that the gubmint is going to pay for it.
Nobody put a gun to the heads of these students to take out those loans. Now the crybabies wail that they can’t repay them. Tough. Jesus forgives sins, but taxpayers do not have to forgive loans that should never have been made.
Obama had the government handing out loans to people who had no prayer of ever paying them back because they would never finish college. Four percent of the “Dreamers” (aka illegal alien freeloaders) actually graduate from college, while thousands never finish but have somehow qualified for taxpayer-funded student loans.
Its likely most of the discussion they hear about student loans are about people for whom it is a crisis.
Seriously, who couldn’t see this coming?
Higher education is more corrupt than the FBI.
Let me give you the Gospel. American does NOT face the student debt crises. We don’t give a crap about the student debt crises. Nobody gave a crap about my tuition— my squalid housing— My damned missed meals. Totaly know this. We will NEVER bail those snowflake democrat socialists out !! Screw them. Get a fricking JOB!! Work hard or we will take it out of you tax refunds or you social security. And you will never file bankruptcy on this debt!!!I am tired of this communist=t crap
They have been sold a bill of goods. There are options to going deeply in debt for a college education that only qualifies them to work at Starbucks such as a short stint in the military to pay for college or learning a trade.
