Sniper Shoots ISIS Fighter Dead From Over One Mile Away With 40-Year-Old Gun
Newsweek ^ | 8-12-18 | Jason Lemon

A British soldier from the elite Special Air Service has shot and killed an ISIS commander from more than a mile away, in what is thought to be the best long-range shot in the regiment’s 77-year history.

Using a a huge .50 Calibre Browning machine gun, which is nearly 40 years old, the unnamed sergeant, who is a veteran of Iraq and Syria, managed to hit the fighter directly in the chest with a shot that blew off the commander’s arm and shoulder.

“The Islamic State commander was briefing his men and clearly liked the sound of his own voice because he was standing still for a least 20 minutes while his fighters sat on the ground in front of him,” a source familiar with the incident, which took place in June in Afghanistan, told The Daily Star Sunday.

“Didn’t realize those were used as sniper weapons or that they had a semi automatic setting.”

I’m guessing it was not a “Ma Duce”, thinking a Barrett or something like that. Can’t rely on reporters to get the technicals right on something like this.

I felt it couldn't be "practically vertical,"so I checked a ballistics calculator. Sure enough...coming in at about 65 degrees.

Yeah, cold-bore? One shot? Anything is possible, just not very likely. This is not like taking your deer rifle down to the local gun club range and sighting it in at 100 yds. You’d need a skilled spotter adjusting your fire and a quick follow-up shot. It’s more like an artillery strike.

It probably went something like this:
Reporterette: “What bullet are you using?”
Sniper: “50 BMG, Ma’am.”
Reporterette: “What does ‘BMG’ stand for?”
Sniper: “Browning Machine Gun, Ma’am.”
Reporterette scribbling notes: “Shooting machine gun.”

I used a 20 degree wedge to mount a Leupold on my space gun to shoot 1,000 yard matches with 80 grain .223.

“They say the isis commander was a little long winded.”

I might forward this to our preacher.

Just imagine you are in a school circle for 20 minutes listening to this guy share all of his ‘tactics’ for fighting for Allah.

And then, out of nowhere, you are literally bathed in the guy’s blood as he is torn to pieces.

Think that might be a sign to students in that school circle that ISIS is not really working for the good of Allah?

With an old automatic, it was a Hail Mary shot with just the right amount of Kentucky windage.

We’ve been putting scopes on them since we’ve been using them, and today they have the most modern optics on them.

Incorrect. The M2 trigger has a latch below it. IIRC, if you rotate the sleeve, it secures the latch and permits automatic fire. Rotate the sleeve to the right, the latch is released and the weapon fires semi-automatically.

The barrel rifling is more than adequate for precision fire in semi-auto mode. All you need is a good sight and understanding of the impact of weather and terrain upon your round as it travels to the target.
