BEFORE the announcement that the talks were revived...
Chna greatly increased its capital controls to halt the slide in the Yuan.

That counts as a concession (a moderate one) just for the meeting IMO.

But you didn’t answer the question.

How has sending $6 trillion of our wealth overseas in the past decade enriched America?

I would think the answer is obvious. Americans buy stuff from China and all over the world because the products are desirable and priced favorably.

The benefit to America is a vast wealth of purchasing options at prices less than those available from domestic producers unable to effectively compete. The money saved by sharp purchasing can be used for other purchases. The aggregate savings turn over is immense

American companies know this and to survive have established production elsewhere including China. American purchasing agents buy from import vendors because they can buy low and sell higher. They create very satisfied customers.

The business of America is business. America thrives from both importing and exporting. The President is keenly aware of that very basic fact and is striving mightily to grow our exports.

His question is relevant, and the answer not obvious at all.

The answer is, it didn’t help us one bit. The tariffs and unilateral non-economic restrictions on US goods in China was supposed to be temporary - something to get them going.

It remained permanent. Add to that the trillions of dollars of IP the Chinese stole with impunity, and the H1-B program that robbed the US of a generation of excellent, high-paying jobs and you have an organized effort to demote the US to a second rate economic power.

It’s a generational theft of massive scale.

The permanance is ending.

President Trump is seeing to that

To try to argue we did not benefit from inexpensive imports is just foolish.

Bottom line is that how Americans spend money on what they buy is not really any of your business

Sorry, but you still didn’t answer the question, “How has sending $6 trillion of our wealth overseas in the past decade enriched America?”

Your answer could have been given to the reverse question of $6 trillion in surpluses to the US over a decade (”America [had] a vast wealth of purchasing options”). Meaning your answer could apply whether the US had a net surplus or deficit.

It doesn’t answer the question specifically of the net wealth that has been transferred overseas. It transferring trillions of dollars overseas every decade is somehow beneficial to the US, why don’t other countries want that same benefit. Why doesn’t Germany say, “stop producing so many goods for export, lets run a huge trade deficit so our country can benefit”?

Do you understand why Germany doesn’t do so? Because it would not benefit their economy just as running $6 trillion in deficits has not benefitted the US.

Think about it my friend, if the “system” you are supporting is so great, why doesn’t Germany, Japan, Mexico, South Korea, etc not want to run great trade deficits. If you think logically about it, you know why these countries don’t want trade deficits - because their wealth would be transferred to others.

You are attempting to argue a point that is meaningless. trade is about buying and selling. I pointed out that the value is in the things purchased. The enrichment is the value palced by Americans that are free to buy what they want.

Your crude bean counter gambit is foolish in evaluating a situation not measured in your thoughts on enrichment.

The primary point is that what you think doesn’t matter. America has loudly proclaimed you don’t matter. Americans buy what they want. That is none of your business.

I tried to have a civil discussion with you. But you have to resort to “you don’t matter”. You were unable to articulate a rationale answer for why $6 trillion in trade deficits over a decade benefited America.

If our trade deficits were so great, other countries would want to have them. Obviously, they don’t want trade deficits. That is why they are fighting Trump.

you don’t matter because your arguments are pitiful.

your thoughts on enrichment are irrelevant because enrichment is a bogus goal

What matters is that Americans can and do buy what they want.

Your straw man has been burned
