China is sending a trade envoy to Washington in a renewed effort to end a worsening tariff dispute that has raised worries it will chilal global economic growth. Hopefully..., but, China plans in decades while we plan from month to month, or at most, election to election! There is NO WAY that a victory lap is in order!

This is true.
If something positive comes out of this it will be fairly small, more symbolic than substantial, but it will keep them more careful for a while.
Perhaps make them modify their strategy a bit.

No, of course not. It's gonna be a process. What's significant is that the Chicoms are blinking - that just does not happen very often. And they're going up against the craftiest negotiator in the Western world. I sleep very well at night knowing that.

Nope - they plan to survive month-to-month. No term limits, but nothing to prevent Party rivals from removing them, either, except for superior firepower. China’s rulers exist in a world of unending palace intrigues. And that is why they are always hyper-sensitive about criticism - it’s brute force rather than law that keeps them in power. Allowing criticism might give their subordinates ideas.

Balance sheets are reckoned quarterly, long term plans be damned.
