Opinion: Capitalism can crack climate change. But only if it takes risks
The Guardian ^ | August 17, 2018 | by Larry Elliott

This summer’s heatwave has provided a glimpse of the future, and it is not a pretty one. On current trends, the years to come will see rising temperatures, droughts, a fight to feed a growing population, and a race against time to reduce dependency on fossil fuels.

The struggle to combat climate change brings out the best and worst of capitalism. Decarbonisation of the economy requires alternatives for coal and cars that run on diesel, and that plays to capitalism’s strengths.

The good news is that in Beijing and New Delhi, policymakers have woken up to the idea that green growth is better growth. China is committed to phasing out coal, in part because it is worried about climate change and in part because it sees an opportunity to be a world leader in green technology. India, although slower to act, is also starting to take advantage of collapsing prices for electricity generated by solar and wind, and has set itself demanding renewables targets.

But the bad news is that progress towards decarbonisation is still not fast enough. As things stand, fossil fuels will still account for more than 50% of energy consumption by 2050. CO2 emissions will carry on rising and global warming will continue.

And, more than anything, it means accepting that the world needs to wage war against climate change. Powerful vested interests will say there is plenty of time to act, and they are aided by climate-change deniers who say there is nothing to worry about. These people need to be called out. They are not deniers, they are climate-change appeasers. And they are just as dangerously misguided as fascism’s appeasers in the 1930s.

The Manchester Guardian makes the New York Times look like the Bircher newspaper.

The only way to slow down climate change is to stop the out of control human breeding. Won’t happen.

I hope this is the future. Here in central KY we’ve had an unusually mild summer. It’s been absolutely awesome!

What the author is experiencing is WEATHER.

You cannot even detect climate change in your lifetime never mind a few years.

Fifteen articles and five of them are related to ‘climate change’.

What is going on here?

So “climate change” = Hitler. I am confused, I thought Trump was Hitler. Can there be more than one Hitler?

Conservatives watch the Movie “Geostorm” and think it’s just a Popcorn Movie where the best scene is when an errant Climate Changing Satellite (Yeah, I know) blows up the DNC Convention Hall that is packed with Rats.

Liberals think it’s a Documentary.

Whether there’s one of us or one hundred trillion of us on this planet, the climate doesn’t give a rat’s behind about us. Mother Nature is going to do what she wants. I’m beyond fed up with these envirowackos who live fat and sassy, enjoy the benefits and comforts of fossil fuel technology, live in air conditioning in the summer heat and warm and toasty in the winter, drive cars and fly around in private jets wearing sack cloth and wailing about ‘’climate change’’ and Gaia. To a good per centage of the worlds population Mother Nature is one mean, cruel and capricious bitch. If she isn’t blowing you up with a volcano and smothering you in pyroclastic flow and choking ash, she’s rending your world apart with an apocalyptic earthquake or drowning you in a massive tsunami, freezing your ass off and burying you in five feet or more of snow. “White Death’’ as they call it in the Alps.. And her sisters in the heavens, the stars, meteors and comets. Man those babes have the mad on all the time. Exploding in planet destroying supernovas crashing into us with big chunks of iron and nickel anywhere from a few yards to a few miles across at speeds of up to 40,000 mph. And let’s not forget her in-laws. All manner of filthy viruses, bacteria and diseases. Hey, don’t get me wrong, I love the old gal, but I don’t have to like her.

Nuclear is one possible alternative... in the future. But that ain’t happening. Not for decades or centuries...never.

Thorium energy.

The answer to the majority of everyone’s concerns, whether those concerns are legitimate or contrived.

Re: “Nuclear is one possible alternative...”

As you point out, “never” is probably when that will happen.

My step brother is involved in a nuclear alternative start up company.

Almost everyone in that industry is completely dependent on government funding.

There are a few companies sponsored by Billionaires - one by Bill Gates for instance.

LOL - I can recall a family vacation in the 1950s when we toured the Oak Ridge National Lab, walked through a room-sized mock up of a nuclear fusion reactor (The Future!), and then put dimes (supplied by my Dad) into a machine that “radiated” the coins and encased them in plastic!

Here in central KY we’ve had an unusually mild summer. It’s been absolutely awesome!

Other than CA I want to know where this alleged heatwave occurred. It was cooler than normal here in the CO Rockies, cooler than normal where you are and cooler than normal on the Atlantic seaboard.

I didn't keep track of the rest of the country but I haven't heard of any unusually high temps.

Weren’t we supposed to be driving flying cars by 2015... oh, wait.

The necessity is the mother of invention rule applies here. Sadly.

Re: “Unusually high temps”

Seattle has had one of the worst Summers in my memory.

Five straight weeks of temperatures 5-15 degrees above normal.

“Normal” is usually in the 70s for this time of year.

We have had a huge high pressure dome just sitting over this region for weeks. It pulls super heated air from the central California valleys straight up into Washington state.

If the high pressure was 100 miles further to the east, it would have pulled 95-100 degree air over the Cascades for days on end.

Instead, the high pressure is mostly over the Pacific, which “cools” it to 85-90 degrees, but with tropical humidity levels.

You can't brush your teeth without breaking into a sweat.

In King County (Seattle), only one third of homes have air conditioning.
