I recall a number of years back, either here or somewhere else online, reading a story from someone who discussed a personal story about when he was in about the eighth grade at junior high school in the Fort Worth area during the midst of the Johnson years.

He did a book report presentation to his class on a book (probably one of those you very discreetly bought) about LBJ and his not very ethical conduct of his political career and related affairs (likely very crooked and very corrupt) over the years and how these were tied to his wife’s very well to do background and business interests. The book also discussed very the wealthy (and very corrupt) business people and interests, along with Lady Bird’s, that supported him over the years in Texas and beyond.

Apparently, doing this report got this person marched into the principal’s office shortly thereafter for a good speaking to about not ever presenting a book like that to the class ever again along with having his parents contacted and the same sort of talking to relayed to them as well.

... with Johnson as his running mate

I'm not a big fan of Kennedy, but to be fair, Kennedy didn't choose Johnson.

Mike Mansfield, along with Johnson, showed up at Kennedy's door after the nomination, and told Kennedy, "Lyndon's going to be your running mate."

Was he a hero of Civil Rights, or just an opportunistic cynical racist seeking to keep Democrats in power.

Using the word ‘Nigger’ means nothing, its how you treat people. You can use the word Nigger and take the shirt off your back to help a Black person, whereas, you can virtue signal all day long, yet treat people like garbage.

Serwer has violated a major taboo. This is bad mojo. He will suffer for this. He is the wrong race to use such terminology. My suggestion is he sacrifice a chicken pronto.

LBJ believed black people to be very fearful of snakes, and the story is he kept one in the trunk of his car and would ask the black gas station attendant to check his trunk. LBJ would laugh hysterically while the black attendant would scream and run from the slithering snake.

Biographer Robert Caro says that it was MacArthur playing the long game with Johnson in "awarding" the Silver Star.

LBJ was the only member of Congress not to resign when enlisting.

MacArthur had him pegged, and figured the military was going to need friends in Congress, spending-wise, after the war.

Hence, making Johnson "part of the fraternity".

IOW, DM invited the sleaze into the tent to urinate out, rather than make Johnson feel slighted, and take future opportunities to urinate into the tent.

The HUGE problem with Pres. Lyndon Johnson and civil rights is the following imo.

Johnson ignored that a previous generation of state sovereignty-respecting Supreme Court justices had clarified the 10th Amendment by stressing that powers that the states have not expressly constitutionally delegated to the feds are prohibited to the feds.

"From the accepted doctrine that the United States is a government of delegated powers, it follows that those not expressly granted, or reasonably to be implied from such as are conferred, are reserved to the states, or to the people. To forestall any suggestion to the contrary, the Tenth Amendment was adopted. The same proposition, otherwise stated, is that powers not granted are prohibited [emphasis added].” —United States v. Butler, 1936.

In other words, Congress must be able to reasonably justify any law that it makes, including Johnson's civil rights laws, with a power that the states have expressly constitutionally delegated to Congress. And this is where we get into major constitutional problems with Johnson’s civil rights laws imo.

Note that the only express constitutional delegations of power to deal with race and sex address only voting rights issues, evidenced by the 15th and 19th Amendments.

In other words, Johnson was another Constitution-ignoring, state sovereignty-ignoring president like FDR imo. This is evidenced by Johnson failing to first rally Congress to successfully petition the states to amend the Constitution to give Congress the specific power to deal with INTRAstate race and sex issues outside the context of voting rights before signing civil rights bills into law.

FDR had likewise failed to get the Constitution's Article V consent of the states before working with Congress to establish his social spending programs.

In fact, based on what I've been reading about Johnson, he looked for ways to win minority votes for Democrats, the Constitution be damned.

Corrections, insights welcome.

The remedy for unconstitutionally big federal government …

Patriots need to pink-slip career lawmakers in the 2018 midterm elections, replacing them with state sovereignty-respecting patriot lawmakers, who will support Pres. Trump's vision for MAGA.

Also, patriots would be able to get the unconstitutionally big federal government off their backs on a more permanent basis if patriots would support Trump in leading the states to repeal the 16th and ill-conceived 17th Amendments.

It’s just a word. Nothing more than air passed over the vocal cords, which soon dissipates and is gone. Uttering a word (with no animus or intent to do harm) no more makes you racist than going target shooting with an AR-15 makes you a mass murderer.

Most consider LBJ a hard core progressive based on his "Great Society". On the other hand, toward the end of his presidency, he had a phone conversation with Eisenhower. During the conversation he said, General Eisenhower, there are elements in America that are set out to destroy our constitutional government and I am afraid these elements are part of the democratic party. LBJ saw the progressives using the Vietnam turmoil to try to destroy our nation...the same ones that are at it today.

LBJ's poor leadership did harm the country, but his "worldview" would be way to the right of many of our republicans today.

“I’ll have those n*ggers voting Democratic for the next 200 years.”...exactly why conservatives, and Trump, should simply laugh in the faces of all who try to label them as "racists" - everybody's doing it.....

Hoover was not the worst....he believed in AMerican rugged individualism and thought it would carry us through the depression. Eventually, it would have and we would not have 21 trillion in debt paying for all of FDR's programs and programs that they have spawned through time.

The worst thing we ever did was not giving Hoover a 2nd term.

LBJ used very colorful language about many things. Michael Beschloss once worked on a transcription of the dictaphone recording LBJ inherited from JFK in the Oval Office and thought it would be a great way to preserve his conversations for history.

One transcription had been translated as LBJ saying “a pack of them bastards” only to realize the correct context was “the Pakistan Ambassador”.

LBJ one told an aide how he defines loyalty. “Loyalty is when somebody will kiss my bare wrinkled ass in the front window of Macy’s at high noon and tell me it smells like roses.”

Compared to LBJ, Bill Clinton was simply crude.

When your heart’s in the right place the nigras don’t care. A racist’s money is as green as anyone else’s.

James Eastland defended a lot more than white supremacy

Eastland was born into and died in Sunflower county in the Mississippi delta which is 75% black

Figure it out

i’m sure LBJ was prejudiced as many Southerners had been taught to be. i don’t know that i would call him a racist though.

Racism is an ideology predicated on the belief that one race is inherently superior to another. It has nothing to do with how nice you are or how many times you've said the n-word. I've seen non-racist whites who hated blacks and asians, and racist whites who would bend over backward for them.

Johnson was the worst type of racist - he created programs that broke the black community - turned them into dependent pets who would vote democrat for 200 years.

AND THE PRESS PROTECTED JOHNSON... the black community was lied to for decades about Johnson's toxic racism.

It wasn't the word 'nigger' that was the worst - it was what Johnson did to the black family that mattered. He destroyed the father's authority in the black community and threw the children to the wolves.

Then Senator Byrd - who REALLY WAS A KKK MEMBER - just like Johnson (yes, KKK member too) thrilled in using the black community as 'pets'... reliable pets to prop up their power.
