"... cannot see how bears lives were put in danger..." If a bear kills a human, the bear is killed. By giving the bears a chance to attack him, he was needlessly putting them in mortal danger.

The only thing I can figure is that if he did get attacked, someone may have shot the bears while trying to rescue him.
