The superintendent of Chicago's beleaguered police department shifted the blame for the city's gun violence epidemic from the cops to the courts, blaming judges and prosecutors who refuse to jail repeat offenders arrested with illegal firearms.
Supt. Eddie Johnson, speaking on Monday at Chicago Police Headquarters, said his department can “only do so much," but noted “it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out why shootings continue to be a problem in Chicago.”
“These shootings are not random,” Johnson said. “They’re fueled by gang conflicts. We know who they are.
He added: “If people don’t give us the information we need, and our judicial partners don’t hold them accountable, would you stop if that’s what you wanted to do? You know, it’s ridiculous.”
Johnson, who has called for tougher punishment in the past for those convicted of firearms offenses, said "as long as we fail to create repercussions for carrying and using illegal guns, or more importantly, hold repeat violent offenders accountable for their actions, we’re simply going to continue to have these discussions on Monday mornings.”

I used to say that you send the wrong message when Tyrone the local drug pusher is arrested and back on the street a week later. And you send the right message when Tyrone is arrested and, two years later, when asked, “what happened to Tyrone”, the answer is “He’s still got another two years in the slammer. Same thing happened to the guys that tried to replace him.”
When the word is out that you WILL get busted and you WILL do time, people are less likely to do it.

I’d say it’s right on target.
The officers go out there and risk their lives to make these arrests, and the judges casually release them to take part in the next weekend’s festivities.
I think very few police chiefs can be described as ‘liberals’. They may like police unions and a high-tax state to fund their pensions, but otherwise, not so much.
Wait...I thought the problem was from an unjust system that incarcerates too many POCs. Now they tell me there aren’t enough incarcerated POCs. It must be hard being a liberal. How do you justify your angst?

No male guidance, mother is a crack addict that supports her habit by stealing, tricken, and welfare or mother is trying to raise her kids correctly but is overwhelmed by the circumstances.
Either way, these kids get up to bat with an 0-2 count and our rules and values do not apply in these conditions.
Thanks Hojczyk. IOW, this will be spun into a "need" for even more attempts at firearm confiscation. The only real problem in Chicago is that the police try to stop gang killings. Use the Paradox of Zeno to advantage -- each killing reduces the number of potential killers by 50 percent. Eventually arrest the last one standing, arraign, try, convict, imprison.
I am a retiresd Illinois State Police Officer. Nearly every convicted felon that I charged in a felon in unlawful possession of a firearm case had the gun charges dismissed at the plea bargain, if there were other accompanying charges with more jail time.
There are few things more useless than more gun control laws.
That’s part of the problem - - another part is broken family structures caused by liberal ‘no fathers in homes’ incentives...
Well, it may be a partial cause, but there are much deeper reasons for it that nobody dares explore.
