I'm very embarrassed to say I found it in Jacobin Magazine, a socialist rag. That's actually why I intentionally omitted the citation. I was looking for another well written, concise summary, but thought this one was well constructed and written.

She wrote about the Dylan Roof murders of black parishioners at Charleston’s Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church and said it "replayed a central theme in American history." She included the text I posted as a backdrop to her condemnation of America in the 21st century.
