Despite the disgusting Robert Mueller’s best efforts, Donald Trump remains unscathed
The Spectator ^ | August 22, 2018 | Roger Kimball

A few take-aways from yesterday’s prosecutorial frenzy.

1. Paul Manafort is in deep trouble. Absent a presidential pardon, he is likely to spend the rest of his life behind bars.

2. The crimes of which Manafort was convicted — eight counts of tax evasion and bank fraud — not only predated his brief relationship with Donald Trump but had nothing to do with main focus of Robert Mueller’s original writ, namely, to investigate ‘any links and/or coordination between the Russian government and individuals associated with the campaign of President Donald Trump.’ That was the nub of Mueller’s marching orders. But note that Rod Rosenstein also authorised him to pursue ‘any matters that arose or may arise directly from the investigation.’ Any matters. That is not quite as broad as the topics encompassed by the title of Sartre’s Being and Nothingness, but it is close enough for government work, and what we saw yesterday was most definitely government work.

3. Michael Cohen, Donald Trump’s former lawyer and sometime self-described ‘fixer’, would also appear to be in deep trouble. Yesterday, he entered a plea bargain and pled guilty to eight counts of tax evasion, bank fraud, and campaign finance violations ‘in coordination and at the direction of a candidate for federal office.’

This is an excellent short summary of recent events.

Trump is doing well.

The Manafort case will not hurt him. Manafort will need a Trump pardon.

Cohen is now a Clinton stooge and will end up either in jail or part of the Clinton body count.

Mueller has had the full resources of the Federal government and the media to use to attack President Trump and despite the enormous mismatch he has failed miserably.

If I had been Cohen, I would have gambled on the generosity of Donald Trump, not on DOJ prosecutors.

If Cohen had maintained complete silence, Trump would have pardoned or commuted his sentence after the November 2020 election.

Instead, Cohen will get at least 4 years from his DOJ deal, and nothing will happen to Trump.

Manafort faces a second trial, this time with the wonderful Amy Berman Jackson presiding.

He has some hope on the first trial; possibly Judge Ellis will sentence him to something reasonable — like fines/tax penalties, etc. But Jackson should spare us the kangaroo court phase and impose multiple life sentences as she intends.

My question is: how is it that Cohen is buying a multi-million dollar home, yet someone has started a GoFundMe account for him??

There is a cost though and is Trump admitting to the payment. I am more than sure his wife is or was well aware of what went down.

So the Democrats are going to play this right into November. They will try to shame conservative voters for voting for an adulterer. I have to think most cogent people sort of knew what came in the package when they voted for Trump?

Just because he paid the porn star to go away doesn’t mean he did anything with her. $130 is not a great deal of money to somebody like President Trump. I don’t believe that somebody who seems as worried about STDs as President Trump would touch Stormy Daniels with a 10 meter cattle prod.

He is not unscathed.

Much more concerning is that Rule of Law, Due Process, and Attorney-Client Privilege are not unscathed.

MAGA marchers can gloat, but I fear for the future of this Constitutional Republic.
