Manafort, Cohen cause no GOP earthquake on Capitol Hill

A day after President Donald Trump’s former campaign manager was found guilty on eight counts of tax and bank fraud, and Mr. Trump’s former personal lawyer Michael Cohen plead guilty to charges that included illegal campaign contributions allegedly orchestrated by Mr. Trump, there was no rush to the exits by Republicans in the Congress, and no expectation on Capitol Hill that GOP lawmakers were ready to abandon the President.

But if Democrats were looking for Republicans to suddenly stand and demand that Mr. Trump leave the White House in the wake of the Manafort and Cohen developments – there was none of that brewing in the halls of Congress on Wednesday.

Asked about making any legislative moves to defend the investigation of Special Counsel Robert Mueller – routinely denounced by the President as a ‘witch hunt’ – there was also no GOP urgency.

“I don’t think Mueller needs any protection, at least he doesn’t need any protection from me,” said Sen. Charles Grassley (R-IA), the head of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

As for the President, he shrugged off the latest turmoil in his administration, invoking Hillary Clinton’s name for the twentieth time this month on Twitter.

Donald J. Trump ✔ @realDonaldTrump

The only thing that I have done wrong is to win an election that was expected to be won by Crooked Hillary Clinton and the Democrats. The problem is, they forgot to campaign in numerous states!

Oh no!!! Republicans are shrugging off Mueller's manufactured convictions!!! We won't be able to stop a second Trump Supreme Court justice and convince the republicans to cower before us so we can win in November!!!

Fail!!

Perhaps the Republicans in Congress understand that the narrative the Democrats are pushing are untrue and that they can see President Trumps base is still strong is the reason they are not abandoning the President.

Any crimes Manafort committed were way before he was associated with the Trump campaign. If he had been arrested and tried before President Trump announced his run for office, President Trumps name would never be associated with the man. To do so now is just slinging mud.

Now with Cohen it would appear that he plead guilty to a non crime as part of a deal to get to President Trump. The suppose crime was to pay off a potential blackmailer before the election using his (President Trump’s own money).

Since the courts have been okay with settlements that included nondisclosure agreements in the past I don’t see how this is a crime. This is a desperate act by a desperate man (Mueller) to get something, anything on President Trump.

Two years of investigation with almost unlimited power and money and this is all they have?

They took their best shot and they missed.

Except for those that hate the President, no one cares.

President Trump has done the one thing they did not count on, he has been successful. And as they say, Success Trumps everything else.

I still dont know what the hell that was even about, and I’m too lazy to look up the detail.

If someone like me is like that, then most people likely dont give a ship.

This court business with Cohen is pure legal chicanery. I think it’s an abuse of the system.

I'd like to see a Venn diagram of people who think; "Clinton/Lewinsky was just about sex", "Trump/sex is The End of Republic", and donors to the Hillary Clinton campaign.

I hired Trump to clean out a swamp. I don't care about his sex life.

Bill Clinton's approval numbers went up with his impeachment. It looks like the worst thing that can be done is to resign and fly out of town like Nixon did (granted, the US Senate was eyeball deep in RINOs back then). Fortunately, I don't think it's in Trump's personality to ever back down.

Of course it is.

One big thing is not being discussed.

Mueller gained access to President Trump’s attorneys files and records. It is evident that they found nothing of a criminal nature (or it would have been leaked before now).

It is my belief that the plan was for Mueller to drag out the investigation as long as possible. They were using the Nixon playbook of drip by drip disclosures to the media undermining the people’s confidence in the President.

Once wounded the RINOs would bring articles of impeachment.

A funny thing happened on the way to the coup d’etat, President Trump has been more successful then any of the past President of the past 60 or more years.

Even Pelosi is walking back impeachment. Not going to happen. When the HATE TRUMPERS finally realize it has all been a lie and that they were being played by crooked Hillary ... well it should be fun to watch as they destroy themselves

Nixon would be among the RINOs today. He imposed wage and price controls, declared himself a Keynesian, and proposed a “full employment budget.” You are right about the difference between them. Nixon was a lifelong politician who cared about what the political class thought of him. Trump is a fighter, and he doesn’t care what the politicians think. Nixon was an insecure guy, and Trump has all the confidence in the world.

I think everyone is waiting to see if the GOP holds both house and senate. If the GOP holds, maybe, just maybe Sessions will wake up and do something.

Of course I am deluding myself. As much as I want Sessions to do something, I finally came to the conclusion that nothing will be done.

Sessions is a weakling. We saw that at his Senate hearing when Kamala Harris kept interrupting him, and all he could say was, “You’re making me nervous.”

Maybe this is the last bullet they have. Amazing how fast they went from charged to trial to conviction isn’t it? I have never seen the courts move so fast. Looks like they want to get all their licks in fast does it not?

At this point I do nit care what Trump or his lawyer did in the past. Just don’t care.

In the Manafort case, I think they wanted to stretch it out longer, basically into September, but the judge was having none of it, and moved the prosecution along. Then the defense presented no case. So quick work there.

I don’t believe what they’re saying about the Flynn sentencing either. I think the reason for the continuing delays is to get the sentencing right before the election.

Relativity is not relevant to me. I’m selfish and don’t care because I and the country are better off now than we have been in at least twenty or maybe thirty years and still improving. I don’wake up pissed off and fearful about what ALL of the gubment is doing and now feel like we have someone working for us. Trump has delivered magnificently even with the deck stacked against him and the dogs of hell chewing on his legs.

I just don’t care what Trump may have done in his past at this point. DON’T CARE AT ALL.

"...Fail!!.." or not, the democRATS will seize on the fact that the president actually knew and hired somebody who was convicted by Mueller as a success and use it to try and impeach Trump with.

Anything the media can use to attack Trump with, is a success to them, not a failure.

Manafort worked for three Presidents - including Ronald Reagan...

Manafort was convicted for things he was involved with YEARS before he worked for Trump.

AND Manafort only worked for Trump for fewer than FOUR MONTHS.

It’s a yawn...
