Menendez’s lead over GOP challenger shrinks in latest poll

New Jersey Sen. Robert Menendez beat corruption charges last year but he’s now locked in a tight race for re-election, according to a poll released Wednesday.

Menendez, a two-term Democrat, leads his GOP challenger, pharmaceutical executive Bob Hugin, by a slim 43 to 37 percent, the Quinnipiac University poll reported.

In March, Menendez was ahead by a comfortable 49 to 32 percent.

Any incumbent who can’t reach 50 percent is considered vulnerable.

Why Bob Menendez is in the political fight of his life

https://nypost.com/2018/08/22/why-bob-menendez-is-in-the-political-fight-of-his-life/

One explanation is provided in the same poll, which shows “ethics in government” as Garden State voters’ top issue.

Those voters, says Quinnipiac analyst Mary Snow, “are sending a clear message: They are troubled by the ethics cloud hanging over” Menendez.
Democratic voters, recall, sent Menendez the same message in June’s primary, when nearly 40 percent cast their ballots for an unknown who spent no money and didn’t even bother campaigning.

It’s not all that hard to figure out why: Menendez may have dodged a legal bullet when prosecutors opted not to retry him after his first corruption case ended in a hung jury.
But voters seem to have reached their own verdict on the nearly $1 million in gifts and donations he took from Dr. Salomon Melgen, and the favors that Menendez then provided his “pal.”

A brief overview of the case against Menendez:

Prosecutors established that Menendez used his office to promote the personal and financial interests of Salomon Melgen, a wealthy Florida eye doctor. He asked the State Department to intervene in Melgen's favor in a port dispute with the Dominican Republic. He also helped secure visas for a few of Melgen's girlfriends.

Prosecutors also established that Melgen provided lavish vacations, flights on a private jet and $600,000 in political contributions to Menendez. The story of the underaged hookers involved was left out of the trial.

The jury accepted these facts, but was unable to reach a verdict, saying that prosecutors failed to prove the first point was a direct result of the second point. In their mind, NJ Senator Menendez was just doing the bidding of a Florida businessman because he's a nice guy. And the Florida businessman was flying Menendez around on his jet and giving him hundreds of thousands of dollars because Bob is so likeable. The trial ended with a hung jury.

A month later Melgen was sentenced to 17 years in prison for Medicare fraud.

I’m not sure it really matters which of these a$$holes wins. Hugin is the one who bills himself as a “Different Kind of Republican”. He’s pro-choice, anti-2A and virulently anti-Trump. He’d vote with Schumer about 75% of the time.

If this was a Republican incumbent with a Democrat challenger, the headline would have been “Menendez weakens, momentum favors Democrat challenger.”

Prosecutors can file again and return him to court. But the Bruce Cutler of the day will do the Mob’s instructions to get Mendacious off. Him being removed would be a huge blow to the Mob.

Of course it matters. Could decide whether Chuck Schumer gets to run the Senate and hand out committee chairmanships or not. The majority party gets to decide which bills and issues even get to come up for a vote. There’s more to the process than how an individual senator votes on issues. Taking that seat from Dems would make them basically have to run the table in the competitive contests to win Senate control.

You forgot two key details, which caused him to be prosecuted over other corrupt Democrats:

He opposed the Iran deal.
He opposed the opening to Cuba.

Those two points spoke more to the totalitarian vindictiveness of Obama than to Menendez’s corruption.

Those two points are why his corruption was prosecuted, while the corruption of others was not.
